As Rabbis of Temple Judea, we are proud of your your choice to belong to a synagogue open to innovation. We welcome reviving rituals of the past as well as introducing new rituals which can enhance the spirituality necessary to creating a sacred space for you and your family. In preparing our High Holy Day Services this year at The Eissey Theatre, we have chosen to honor you for not only belonging, but strengthening Temple Judea as a spiritual center of Jewish life. In arriving at this decision, we have re-examined the history of pulpit honors at High Holy Services. In traditional synagogues world-wide, pulpit honors were generally centered around the Torah Service. Members were called up to chant the Torah blessings, to care for the Torah Scroll and to chant the Haftarah, the portion from the prophets. The Rosh Hashanah evening service was early and brief. The Men attended this Service while the women completed preparations for a long and leisurely Holiday dinner. Kol Nidre Services included the honor of holding the Torah Scrolls while at the Yom Kippur Neilah (concluding) Service, the major honor was opening the Ark. What was distasteful for the founders of Reform Judaism was that all of these honors were publicly auctioned at the High Holy Services. The Shamash or the Sexton either used a peg board or had an incredible memory for he had to wait for the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to collect the donations. It is remarkable that the early Reform synagogues immediately eliminated all High Holy Honors. Our founding Reform Rabbis believed that the entire congregation stood before God as equals and that auctioning off honors severely marred the spiritual feeling of the moment. Mindful of the brilliance of our early Reform Rabbis yet sensitive to time honored tradition, this year, we have been careful to plan our Services so that the rhythm of the liturgy is not marred by constant standing and sitting and by a multitude of members being called up to the Bima. This year, you will be the ones who will be honored! Through creative rituals, we will share our feelings of gratitude with you, how important you are to us! How grateful we are to you as members of an incredible congregation! As always, we appreciate your open mind and your acceptance of our creativity. Our blessings are with you for a wonderful New Year. Let us truly inspire and strengthen each other!

A message from the
Director of Education, Rabbi Yaron
Rosh Hashanah – the Jewish New Year is fast approaching. It’s the season of sober resolutions and hopeful (but too often hopeless) personal pacts. What will you commit to in 5773? What changes will you make in your life that will benefit your community, your family and yourself? Too often we aim too high, we make pledges and promises that we fall short of completing. Year after year, when we realize that once again we did not stand up to our own expectations we are disappointed and frustrated. A study of more than 2,000 people found that a third of last year's pledges only lasted up to a week and one in seven lasted just a few hours!!! You want your resolution to benefit you personally – such as improve your health or relationships, boost your career or ease your guilt. Something that affirms you. On the other hand, it’s important that we think of doing something that can impact our community. As our new year begins we are offering many opportunities to get involved through Jewish education. Whether you become more involved in our school by attending “Learning Parents Showing the Way” sessions and family celebrations, going on our Shabbaton or Israel trip or joining our Torah study or Talmud class, or whether you decide to study toward an Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah or attend our book club – whatever resolution you make this year through Jewish learning, it has the potential of benefiting you personally and our entire community of learners. I am always happy to meet with you and discuss together what might be the right path for you. All you need is to make the first step into a rewarding world of study. Shana Tova!
Rabbi Yaron
A message from the Board Community is at the heart of Temple Judea. Expanding on that credo, we began a Torah project on October 19, 2011. This reached out to our members and families, enabling them to write a letter in what will be our new Torah as of October 7, 2012. This will be a lifetime celebration with dancing and singing to Klezmer music. Rabbi Selig has been our participating scribe. Many of us learned a great deal about the ritual that goes along with the spiritual, moving inscription ceremony. So far, almost 800 members, friends and family have participated in this experience. There is still time for members of our Temple Judea family who have not yet had the emotional experience to sign up to write a letter on September 9
th. To date, we have raised $435,000. With our
outreach program, we hope to reach our goal of $500,000. Thank you to our committee members Dr. David & Lisa Lickstein, Leigh Routman, Adele Shamban, Lesley Birenbaum, Gina Blatt, Marjie Federman, Steve Johnson, Sharon Kitroser Amy Simpson and Jonathan Schneider.

SISTERHOOD CHAPTER TWO….. LADIES OF THE NIGHT
Chapter One is the Sisterhood of Temple Judea as we know it. A wonderful group of welcoming women sharing good times while supporting the Temple we all love. Chapter Two… LADIES OF THE NIGHT will be a second group of women who are Mom’s or Professional Women looking to share good times and get togethers with like- minded women. What we propose are programs geared to a younger group of women who will also be Temple Judea Sisterhood members and supporters. To kick off this group a Meet and Greet is scheduled for October 29
th at Spotos Oyster Bar. The Time is
5:00 PM till 6:30 PM. The purpose of the meeting is to form a group of women who would like to do some different things than the traditional sisterhood group. Wine and snacks will be served. Some ideas are: Mah Jongg and Margaritas, Lilith Salons, discussion groups based on articles in Lilith Magazine. Lilith has fabulous meaty articles written by women, and of interest to women. These can be evening groups held in homes with wine and snacks. How would you like a spicy discussion of Love Stories from the Bible? The programing though, is up to the group. We want all women who belong to Temple Judea to have a Sisterhood that meets their needs. This will not be your mother’s sisterhood. In order to make Chapter Two work, WE NEED YOU, the young mom’s and working women, to attend the Meet and Greet. Share your ideas and make this group your own. Please call the Temple Office at 624-4633 and tell them you want to be a Lady of the Night! They will gladly reserve a spot for you at Spotos. Temple Judea Sisterhood is your Sisterhood. Please share your ideas with us. If you had some great programs at your last Temple that you would like us to try just let us know. We are a wonderful group but with your input we can be FANTASTIC. Please email me at the address shown below. Remember that our Gift Shop is open after services and is available throughout the week for your shopping convenience. One of our office staff will be happy to assist you. Please be sure to introduce yourself to me at services or Sisterhood functions. I know many of you and want to know you all. My best to you all,

A quieter, gentler service
SOCIAL ACTION Let me introduce myself. I am Alan S. Levine, a Temple Judea member since 1997 and a member of the Social Action Committee. The High Holy Holiday Food Drive is for the benefit of the Vickers House. Vickers House is a Crisis and Resource center that serves the elderly, homeless and the needy in all of Palm Beach County. I have been asked to write to you because for the past 14 years I have been a volunteer at the Vickers House. The Vickers House desperately needs your generous donation of food. Unfortunately at times, when some children are asked what they had for breakfast, the child often replies, “it was not my turn to eat breakfast today”. Hunger is on the rise in Palm Beach County. Action is needed. A 2010 “Map the Gap” report released by Feeding America indicates that approximately 212,500 residents in Palm Beach County are considered food insecure. In the past 2 years, Area Agency on Aging and Crisis Line 211 reported that 10,000 calls were received from people requesting Emergency Food Assistance. 51% of children in Palm Beach County live in poverty and therefore qualify for Free and or Reduced School Lunches. On Yom Kippur, if you are fasting and are at Services, seated in a comfortable chair, listening to soothing music, no doubt you are wondering what you will be eating as soon as the Services end. Imagine now that you are relaxed and hungry, however food would only be available to you at the shelter tomorrow at noon. Or maybe, you are one of the lucky ones that will go to the Vickers House in the morning to pick up a bag of groceries. Palm Beach County is known for its wealth and is also a community with a hunger situation where many struggle daily to meet the most basic needs. On behalf of the Needy, thank you in advance for being generous and for remembering to load up your Blue Mitzvah Tote and bring it to Yom Kippur Services. I wish you all, Good Health and an easy Fast.
Happy New Year
Alan S. Levine TJ Social Action Committee Member.

has been at work helping members of our Temple Judea Family. We have made hospital and rehab visits and many calls to members who are ill. Doing this without a budget or funds has been limiting with the kind of services we would like to provide. Our dear member, Calvin Schwartz, has passed away and his wife, Gloria, and his family have provided us with a named fund for our Caring Community. We have met with Ginny Higgins, Calvin's daughter, and she was delighted with the work we are doing and the activities we have projected for the coming year. Ginny said that these are just the kinds of things her father would have wanted. So in Calvin's memory, please feel free to donate to the Caring Community Fund when you are honoring or memorializing a loved one so that we can carry forth the
name of our very generous Calvin Schwartz, who has spent his life helping others. At this High Holy Day season, please join us in doing Mitzvots for our TJ family. We thank our devoted members of this committee and look forward to providing more services that are needed in times of illness or strife. Susan Wolfe-Schwartz will be conducting activities for those who have lost loved ones. Please call either one of us to volunteer your services for the New Year!!
