TRANSCRIPT

Light is electromagnetic radiation that is visible to the human eye.

Film Photography is a very effective medium, even in modern day with the development of digital cameras it can be used to create breath-taking images. Using light, not pixels, film photography will always have a place within design. In this book you will be able to view some samples of my film photography from a recent project along side the science of light and visuals I have created to demonstrate how light is working within my images.

The speed of light is generally rounded down to 186,000 miles per second. In exact terms it is 299,792,458 m/s (metres per second – that is equal to 186, 287.49 miles per second).

It takes 8 minutes 17 seconds for light to travel from the Sun’s surface to the Earth.

Red, green and blue are the primary colours of light. Mixing them in various ways will make all other colours, including white.

The study of light and the interaction of light and matter is termed optics.

Light is a form of energy which our sense of sight can detect. It is made of electromagnetic radiation and travels in a straight path.

There are many sources of light. The most common light sources are thermal: a body at a given tem-perature emits a characteristic spectrum of black-body radiation.

The bending of light as it passes from one transparent substance to another, like air to water, is called refraction.

When sunlight is intercepted by a drop of water in the atmosphere, some of the light refracts into the drop, reflects from the drop’s inner surface, and then refracts out of the drop. The first refraction separates the sunlight into its component colours, and the second refraction increases the separation. The result is a rainbow.

There are different colours of light because they are light waves which have different wavelengths. Red light has the longest wavelength while violet light has the shortest wavelength.

Along side this booklet I have created a replica out of acetate, allowing me to exhibit my photos and booklet pages. Using an overhead projector to keep with the light theme the booklet can now not only be read but also seen large, projected on a wall.

Setting up the overhead projector in a plain dark room created a nice relaxed image. Keeping away from digital processes made for a soft image from film to wall.

Light is electromagnetic radiation that is visible to the human eye.
