How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

As part of the task, after the production and completing of the music video my next two tasks were to produce a 6-panel digipak and magazine advert both effective and correspondent with my music video.

Digipak

In creating my digipak my initial development came from looking at other digipaks from R&B artists such as Alicia Keys, Estelle and some R&B collection albums and found that lighting was one key element in digipak as it enhances the quality of the images, giving them higher contrast and more appeal in visual for the purchaser.

I then decided to use lighting as something that would enhance my digipak covers in its appearance. The natural lighting in my shots was a bonus to my shots, so I didn’t have to edit them too much. The light aiming at the graffiti from the top gave a brown tone to the picture, making a link with R&B/Soul digipak conventions in terms of colour of brown sepia mono tone colour schemes which links with the stereotypical ethnic demographic that listens to genre but also with the Motown music records which started the emerge of both genres together.

Another strong aspect of my music video to use in the combination of my digipak was the location close ups and medium/long shots of the graffiti and art on the walls, making a combination with the main music video and ancillary text.

Magazine Advert

For the print advertisement of a magazine advert I chose to use an image that linked with the music video in order to successfully combine the main product with the ancillary texts. So I chose an image of myself leaning in the music video’s location background wall, as representing being the artist. The reason is because I thought the graffiti wall was a consistent element that I’ve kept in my music video throughout which would strengthen the consistent brand image between the music video and print production, but also thought would be creative in terms of visuals to magazine readers to look at.

The advert is likely to appear in magazines such as ‘Flavour’, as I believe this magazine not only promotes American artists but also promotes British artists who I believe my artist therefore would have a better chance of being recognised and raise a fan audience of their music. Not also is a broad magazine in terms of artists, it also meets the needs and interests of my target audience, as identified in my audience research. My target audience being strivers, this magazine would encourage them in paying attention to materialistic things such as latest gadgets and expensive brands in order to keep their image and status current and fashionable.

Overall all my productions linked and combine with the main product, making all three products communicate the same ideology through, which if successful will attract the targeted audience.

This example inspired me in creating my advertisement print to promote my digipak. From the example, Jay-Z took slices off the album artwork and used it in the print production of his advertisement, whilst featuring merely the artist and artists’ album, therefore combining both ancillary texts with the main product of the video. Both iconographies are placed in a white background presenting them in a smart and sleek way in order to promote his artistry and work and engaging a current young target audience.

This is known as synergy of products as both ancillary texts resemble each other. This therefore is an effective way of promotion and marketing as audiences would be able to identify the artist with the album and therefore engage with the texts presented.

This is my advertisement product, as it is able to see my advertisement is linked with the main music video and digipak through the location background. I think that the use of location in all my products is very iconic and recognisable to the audience as it establishes a clear link with all the other products.
