•FolkshavebeenlisteningtotheGrandOleOpryforcloseto95years!Theliveradioshow,America’slongest-runningradiobroadcast,airedforthefirsttimeinNovemberof1925.•Thebroadcastwasoriginallycalled“TheWSMBarnDance,”

andairedfromastudiobuiltbytheNationalLifeandAccidentInsuranceCompany.Thecompanychosethestation’scalllettersWSMasanacronymfortheirmotto,“WeShieldMillions.”ThefirstartisttoperformontheprogramwasafiddleplayernamedUncleJimmyThompson.• Itwasn’t untilDecember, 1927 that thename“GrandOle

Opry”wasfirstused.Theshowwasprecededeachweekbyanhourofclassicalmusicandoperaselections.OnDecember10,theprogram’sannouncer,GeorgeD.Hay,declared,“Forthepasthour,wehavebeenlisteningtomusictakenlargelyfromGrandOpera.Fromnowon,wewillpresentthe‘GrandOleOpry’.”Andthenamewasborn!•Theshowcasewasan immediate successandbefore long,

Life building, the broadcast relocated to theHillsboroTheater,aformersilentmovievenue,withanothermovein1936totheDixieTabernacle.TheDixiemayhavebeenabletoseat3,500,butitswoodenbenches,sawdustfloor,andlackofdressingroomsmadeitless-than-desirable.TheOpry’snexthomewasthe2,200-seatWarMemorialAuditorium,whereitremainedfrom1939to1943.• In 1943, the Opry moved to the famous Ryman

Auditorium, its home for the next 31 years. Built andfinancedin1892byNashvillebusinessmanandriverboatmagnateThomasRyman,theauditoriumstartedoutastheUnionGospelTabernacle,designedasahouseofworship.Butwhentheconstructioncostsgreatlyexceededthebudget,the tabernaclewas already$20,000 in debt ($557,704 intoday’sdollars)whenitopened.Asaresult,eventssuchasspeakers,concerts,boxingmatches,andentertainerswerescheduledtohelpitremainsolvent.Thefirstsold-outeventattheRymanwasalecturebyHelenKellerin1913.OtherearlyperformersincludedJohnPhilipSousa,EnricoCaruso,WillRogers,andW.C.Fields,alongwithlecturesbytwoU.S.Presidents.•TheRymansoonbecameknownasthe“MotherChurch

ofCountryMusic,” asmore andmore artistsmade theirdebutthere.EarlScruggshadhisfirstperformancetherein1945,andin1949,25-year-oldHankWilliamsperformed“LovesickBlues”attheRymaninhisfirststageappearance.Hanksetarecordthatnight,whenhewascalledbackforsixencores.• In1954,19-year-oldElvisPresley took to theRyman

stage for his first live performance on a national radiobroadcast, singing “BlueMoonofKentucky.”TheOprymanagerandmostofthepatronswerenotimpressedwithhis rockabilly rhythmandblues, andhewas told thatheshouldconcentrateonhistruck-drivingcareer.ThatwastheKing’soneandonlyperformanceattheOpry,ashevowed

tohimselfnevertoreturn.•PatsyClinedebutedattheRymanin1955andcontinued

performinguntilhertragicdeathin1963atage30.Severalscenes from the 1985movie based on her life, “SweetDreams,”werefilmedattheRyman.• JohnnyCash’sdebutat theRymanoccurred in1956.

Thatnightwasn’tjustagreatnightforhiscareer,itwasalsothenighthemethisfuturewifeJuneCarterbackstageattheRyman.CashwentontohosthisownvarietyshowtapedattheRyman,whichairedfromJune,1969toMarch,1971.•AsNashville’sdowntownbegantodecayinthelate1960s,

theRymanbegantodeteriorateaswell,andNationalLife&Accidentsoughtaspacefora larger,modernhomeforthebroadcast.TheyconsideredtheRymantoosmall,andthelackofairconditioninganddressingroomscalledforachange.Thecompanyboughtfarmlandninemiles(14.5km)eastofthedowntown,andanewcomplex,includingathemeparkandhotelwasconstructed.Asix-footcirclewascutfromthecorneroftheRyman’sstagetobeinlaidonthestageofthenewOpryHouse,enablingallartiststoperformonthesamespotwhereearlycountrylegendsstood.Thenewhomefeaturedairconditioning,lotsofparking,andaseatingcapacityof4,000,andopenedinMarch,1974.
