MINISTER’S MESSAGE
Welcome to the 25th annual Victorian School Sports AwardsIt is a pleasure to welcome you all to the iconic MCG for this historic event.
For a generation, the Victorian School Sports Awards have represented the most prestigious sporting accolades in Victoria’s government school system.
This year, we are proud to celebrate 25 years of this fantastic event.
Along with recognising the outstanding achievements of Victoria’s world-class young sportspeople again this year, I am also thrilled to recognise this significant milestone.
It means that the Victorian School Sports Awards have now been the platform for a generation of talented young Victorians to launch their sporting careers.
For 25 years, these awards have acknowledged the achievements of young Victorians who have gone on to be Olympians, World Champions and title winners, across a range of sports.
That is a wonderful legacy of excellence, which continues to this day.
Congratulations to each of today’s 57 award recipients. You should be extremely proud of yourselves, because it is a massive achievement.
Your success in the sporting arena has been built on the same foundations of hard work and perseverance that everyone needs to succeed in life.
Your persistence, dedication and commitment to teamwork is an example for every student, in every field, all across the state.
That is why the Victorian School Sports Awards are not just a celebration of your sporting achievements, but also the strength of your character.
To that end, I would like to congratulate all of the people who have helped you to become such thriving and dedicated young people, including your parents, teachers, coaches and school leaders.
Today’s event must be an incredibly proud occasion for all of you, so whether you are receiving an award or celebrating the achievements of someone close to you, I hope you all have a wonderful day.
Thank you.
The Hon James Merlino, MPDeputy PremierMinister for Education

OVERVIEW
The Victorian School Sports Awards are the highest sporting accolades presented in Victoria’s government school system.
This annual event, held for the first time in 1994, rewards excellence across all categories of major school sports. The awards are given to students, teachers, parents and volunteers who have excelled or made an outstanding contribution to school sport.
In 2010, a new award recognising community partnerships between schools and local community groups was introduced to acknowledge the vital role that partnerships play in the development of Victorian sports.
This year, for the fourth time, we are delighted to present the Lindsay Gaze Outstanding Sports Leadership Award, in honour of the seven-time Olympian and Basketball Hall of Fame legend. This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to both school and community sport.
Forty eight individual student awards, each known as a Sporting Blue, will be presented across eighteen categories to young athletes for their outstanding success in 2018.
The term Sporting Blue derives from the history of English sport. In 1936, during a boat race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities, a Cambridge oarsman tied a light blue ribbon to the bow of his boat (the colour of his school, Eton College). A dark blue ribbon was then ascribed to Oxford (the colour of Christ Church College).
Subsequently, a Sporting Blue became identified around the world as an accolade of sporting excellence by young people and is distinguished by a two-coloured ribbon attached to a traditional bronze medallion.
The Department of Education and Training believes it is fitting to present Sporting Blue awards as a reflection of the high standard of talent and dedication demonstrated by aspiring young athletes in Victorian government schools.

LINDSAY GAZE OUTSTANDING SPORTS LEADERSHIP AWARDVicHealth is proud to support the annual Lindsay Gaze Outstanding Sports Leadership Award, which recognises outstanding leadership in the promotion of community and school sport.
Lindsay Gaze is a distinguished Olympian. He represented Australia in three Olympic Games before turning to coaching, where he quickly established himself as one of our country’s best basketball mentors. Inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004, he has worked tirelessly to share his remarkable knowledge of and passion for the game.
His contribution has not been restricted to the court. By serving as a member of the NBL Board and FIBA’s technical and rules committees, he has helped shape the structure of the game on a world-wide basis.

For over 30 years, VicHealth has been working to improve the health and wellbeing of Victorians. More recently we have been creating more opportunities for less active Victorians to participate in sport and regular physical activity. In 2018 he medalled in several state swimming events, including the National Swimming Championships. His ability to support and mentor peers resulted in him being chosen to captain several sporting teams. As an all-rounder, Cooper has represented his school in almost every sport.

OUTSTANDING TEACHER CONTRIBUTION AWARDS
Karen GibsonBrighton Secondary College
Karen loves being a sport coach and PE teacher. Her ability to make physical activity a fun, rewarding and positive experience, has led many students to choose a sport
based on her being the teacher! Karen firmly believes advanced skill is not required to take part – everyone can benefit from movement! Karen is a big supporter of girls in sport and has coached six girls and two mixed sport teams across softball, badminton, hockey and lawn bowls; her year 7 and 8 girls’ hockey teams making it through to the state finals.
Bronwyn ChisholmMarlborough Primary School
As a sport teacher, Bonny hopes that her passion for fitness and health will rub off on her students. To provide maximum opportunity, she exposes them to a wide
variety of sport and physical activities including golf, lacrosse, boxing, dance, martial arts, AFL, cricket, soccer and even diving. Bonny’s enthusiasm for her profession is evident. In addition to teaching, she organised athletics and cross country carnivals, ran an inter-school sport program, volunteered for school camps and rose early to join students in a before-school running club.
Sarah JohnsCanterbury Girls’ Secondary College
Sarah is a state league volleyballer in her own right. In a relatively short time, she created a professional development volleyball program for her school’s staff,
tripling teacher and student participation numbers in the sport. To pull this off, she dedicated all her spare time; before school, after school and during her lunch breaks. Sarah also coached a group of year 7 girls, all new to the game, to claim the School Sport Victoria state title in volleyball! The year 8 team followed with yet another state title win, further evidence of Sarah’s dedication.

OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION AWARD
Lenny PermanaSerpell Primary School
For five years, Lenny’s drawn on her experience playing badminton at Olympic level, to coach and train students in the sport. She volunteers weekly,
covering technique, tactics, team play, court etiquette and sportsmanship. Her dedication led Serpell Primary School to win gold at the Victorian Primary Schools Badminton Championships, in first and second divisions, four years in a row! She’s involved parents as team managers, created opportunities for students to train and play in secondary schools, and somehow also finds time to coach the under 15 National Badminton team.

OUTSTANDING SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS AWARDS
The Grange P-12 College
As the first Victorian school to be involved in the NRL’s ‘In League in Harmony’ program, Grange P-12
College and its students are striving to be agents of change. Using sport as a vehicle to create a more cohesive society, they address issues such as social disengagement, racism, gender inequality and bullying, and explore how embracing diversity provides opportunities to move forward together in harmony. A number of the college’s students have graduated to become youth advocates for the program; promoting study, education and working hard as paths to making dreams come true.
Sorrento Primary School
Establishing community partnerships created numerous possibilities for Sorrento Primary School and neighbouring schools.
These connections broadened the variety of sporting opportunities on offer to include skating, lawn bowls, tennis, fishing, triathlon, cross country, colour fun run, stand-up paddle-boarding, ironperson and beach programs, as well as all-district events. Partnerships such as that with St Joseph’s Primary School and involvement in the Friendly Games and the Community Sport Program, drew attention to the importance of sport in developing healthy lifestyles and creating new friendships.
