The Health and Lifestyles Survey (HLS)

• Methodology– In home– 2008, 2010 – n = approx 1,600 15+ years, weighted to NZ population– Response rate around 60%– Population survey

• Collects information related to HSC’s programme areas

• Smoking status• ABC programme, and cessation resources used• Parent/caregiver perceptions of influence on

children • Child’s smoking status• Knowledge of smoking prevalence

• Why do we collect information about public support?– As part of broad monitoring– To understand our audience (so that we

develop approaches appropriately)– To inform the sector– Other agencies use to guide/inform policy

decisions (helps determine feasibility of changes)

– Smoking a real problem

– Society disapproves

– The government should do more

• Public support for tobacco control measures– Reduce access – less outlets

– Branding and packaging

– Ban on displays

– Increase tax – help quitting

• But what about the End Game?– Cigarettes and tobacco should not be sold in New Zealand
