1 Introduction
This document describes the design, structure and contents of the public website set up for CENTRELINE as
part of the project dissemination strategy in order to inform the various target audiences about the main
project objectives with regular updates on the project results. The website is accessible under the URL
http://www.centreline.eu and maintained by the CENTRELINE Project Office (CPO). It is based on
responsive web design (RWD), which provides an optimal viewing and interaction experience – easy reading
and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling – across a wide range of devices from
desktop computer monitors to mobile phones and tablets. The website development team consists of a
designer, a web developer, an editor and a content specialist, who worked collaboratively together.
The CENTRELINE public website comprises details about the project objectives and work plan, together
with the list of participants and key personnel involved. Throughout the project, the website will become a
major tool to present the project outcomes to a wide audience beyond the engineering community. On-
going activities will also be regularly updated and communicated through the Press & Media page and its
subsections.

2 Website objective and target audience
2.1 Objectives
The public CENTRELINE website can be reached at http://www.centreline.eu; a domain, which is simple to
remember. As part of the project communication and dissemination activities the main objective of the
website is to ensure that the impact of the project and its results will be achieved at societal and industrial
levels. Besides other dissemination and communication tools (e.g. social media, general communication
material such as flyers, short video documentation), the website guarantees that EU-funded research is
adequately communicated to all relevant stakeholders and target audiences. The website promotes the
main benefits resulting from the project and depicts the necessity to further develop the innovative and
efficient Propulsive Fuselage Concept (PFC) of CENTRELINE. The CENTRELINE project aims to
demonstrate the proof of concept for a ground-breaking approach to synergistic propulsion-airframe
integration. The concept features a turbo-electrically driven propulsive device at the aft-fuselage that
entrains and re-energises the fuselage boundary layer flow in order to eliminate the viscous drag effects in
the fuselage wake field. The innovative and technical approach of CENTRELINE – the positive effect of
wake-filling propulsion integration through Boundary Layer Ingestion (BLI) – is explained for the public at
large on the website. Furthermore, the website presents the key methodological pillars substantiating the
planned research, promotes expected impact of the project and the project structure is outlined. The
website will also be a portal to disseminate CENTRELINE scientific publications, and to present the main
activities and next steps to be taken. It contains information about the consortium, with detailed
descriptions of the partners involved and the Coordinator and the CPO as contact points.
To establish a channel of communication between research and industry and public, the website
development focused on a user-friendly and unique design, effective navigation, browser consistency, fast
loading pages and mobile compatibility. The objective is to present the complex content clearly structured,
considering SEO factors (keywords in headings, first sentences and paragraphs). As the website will be
updated frequently in order to provide the latest publications and news, a state-of-the-art content
management system has been chosen, which is easy to use, so that the content can be changed quickly
according to the projects progress.
2.2 Target audience
The CENTRELINE public website targets a wide range of audiences, such as:
• Funding authorities, including the EC
• The general public
• The scientific/technical community
• Policy makers
• Aeronautics industry (airframe and engine manufacturers)
• Aircraft customers
• Industrial partners not involved in the project (key technical component suppliers)
• Press representatives/journalists

3 Website design & technical implementation
3.1 Design
Considering current website design trends and user behaviour, the design is clear and minimalist. This
enables an intuitive and easy navigation following the fact that users are rather browsing websites than
reading long articles. The distinctive design facilitates to communicate the CENTRELINE objectives, the
benefits of the concept and values of the CENTRELINE research. Therefore, the design reflects a consistent
look and feel within the subpages of the website, but also beyond. All communication and dissemination
tools of CENTRELINE (social media accounts, flyer, poster and video) use a coherent design. The black and
white portraits on the consortium page match the distinctive design. The topography is well chosen, also
considering to be user-friendly, coherent and corresponds with the logo. The ‘CENTRELINE font’ is a true
type font and the colour scheme is characterized by light blue, reflecting the colours of the logo, and dark
grey (header and footer). The CENTRELINE website features captivating banners and catchy slogans (e.g.
“How are we going to fly in 2035? – Less emissions. More efficiency”), which are easy to remember and take
into account SEO factors (Figure 1). High quality photographs contribute to a strong visual identity and
support the communication of the key message. As the target audience include the public, generic pictures
(as a cloudy sky) are combined with a technical vector graph of the CENTRELINE concept, a picture of a wind
tunnel experiment at TU Delft and an Airbus A380 cockpit at night. TU Delft and AIRBUS are part of the
CENTRELINE consortium. The banner is presented as a slideshow and each photo matches with a different
menu button: Innovation – Project – Consortium – Press & Media – Contact.

3.2 Technical implementation
The website is programmed in responsive web design. RWD is an approach to web design aimed at crafting
sites to provide an optimal viewing and interaction experience – easy reading and navigation with a
minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling – across a wide range of devices from desktop computer
monitors to mobile phones (Figure 2 & 3). The technical challenges include to program fast loading pages,
to ensure browser consistency and to optimize for high search engine rankings. The mobile design has been
implemented with a so-called hamburger menu. Interactive elements have been minimized in order to
facilitate fast loading pages.

4 Website structure and content
A good and simple site structure helps the user as well as search engines to navigate the site. The
CENTRELINE website is characterized by a minimalist header, just including the logo and the horizontal
menu bar, a body (either double columned or centred) and a large footer. The EU emblem is displayed in the
footer as well as a disclaimer stating that the CENTRELINE project has received funding from the European
Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Figure 4). With this, the requirement to promote
the action and visibility of funding as set out in Articles 27.3, 28.2, 29.4 and 38.1.2 of the H2020 General
Model Grant Agreement1 is fulfilled. Furthermore, the footer includes the CENTRELINE logo, linked social
media icons (Twitter, LinkedIn, Research Gate), Imprint/Privacy Policy/Copyrights and a sitemap to navigate
the site easily. The header and footer is consistent on all pages of the CENTRELINE website.
The menu bar displays the main pages of the website: Innovation – Project – Consortium – Press & Media –
Contact. The submenus are placed on the header photos on each page.
4.1 Innovation – The homepage
“How are we going to fly in 2035? – Less emissions. More efficiency”: The homepage (Figure 1, 5 and 6) is the
first impression of the website and the visual identity influences the further engagement of the visitor. To
catch the visitor’s attention, a slide show with catchy slogans and pictures are displayed and leading the
visitor through the menu bar. A short text features the innovative capacity of the CENTRELINE project and
a vector graphic shows the technical concept. CENTRELINE works on a particularly promising overall

4.2.4 Impact
This page takes up again the question from the slide show banner: “How are we going to fly in 2035?” The
high-level targets of CENTRELINE are based on the comparison with an advanced conventional reference
aircraft equipped with aerodynamic, structural, power plant and systems technologies suitable for a
potential Entry Into Service (EIS) year 2035 (the “R2035”). CENTRELINE will mature the concept of fuselage
wake-filling propulsion integration for large commercial aircraft application from TRL 1-2 to 3-4. The project
is set up to maximise the impact of the PFC technology on global emissions and climate, European
leadership and the social acceptance of aviation. Besides specific impacts, such as the decrease of the
environmental impact of air vehicles, CENTRELINE’s propulsive fuselage aircraft technology concept is
tailored to contribute to the ambitious goals of the EU policy as defined in the Flightpath 20502. A hyperlink
to the Flightpath 2050 is inserted (Figure 10).

4.3 Consortium
“Joined forces of 9 partners from 6 countries”: This section is one of the most interactive and divided into
PARTNERS and TECHNICAL ADVISORY BOARD (Figure 12). An interactive map locating the partners
involved in the project helps to get a quick overview. A group photo, individual logos and short descriptions
of partners presents the consortium. With a click on a partner logo, a box appears below the logo displaying
key information on the selected partner, a short depiction of the entity itself, its role in the project and short
curriculum vitae of the key personnel involved (Figure 11). Hyperlinks to the websites of partners and to
related EU funded projects are inserted.
