The Evolution of Nursing Practice
Since the time of Florence Nightingale, nurses have been trying to define what makes nursing a unique profession. She was the first to describe nursing as both art and science
ArtScience
Nursing: Both Art and Science Nursing as an ART
Based on a framework of caring and dignity
Acknowledges the dynamic processes of spirituality, healing, empathy and mutual respect
Embraces healing through compassion, helping, competence, being present, tolerance, acceptance and nurturing
Nursing as a SCIENCE Based on critical
thinking Requires clinical
decision-making Relies on evidence to
guide practice Uses strategies to
provide optimal outcomes
Nursing Defined It has not been until the last 40 years
that professional nursing organizations began to define the professional responsibilities of registered nurses.
Although there are many specialty nursing organizations, the American Nurses Association represents an authority in professional nursing without regard to the nurse’s practice environment
ANA’s Definition of Nursing
“Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations. “
(Nursing's Social Policy Statement, Second Edition, 2003, p. 6 & Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2004, p. 7)
