PARISH VISION STATEMENT As the Parish of Saint Columbkille, we strive to be a welcoming, caring, Catholic family that transforms lives, proclaiming the Kingdom of God.
(Vision is about who we want to be in the future…)
OUR WEEKLY MISSION Christmas Season Thank You: On behalf of our entire pastoral staff and priests, I want to thank everyone for your generous gifts and cards we received throughout the Christmas season. May our entire parish family be blessed abundantly in this New Year of 2020! State of the Parish Report: Please take the opportunity to pick up a
copy of the 2019 Annual State of the Parish Report at the doors of the church this weekend and read it. This four-page double-sided color report illustrates important parish statistics collected between July 1st, 2018 through June 30th, 2019. One action item we need to address this year is the fact that our weekly Mass attendance decreased from an average of 2,300 people in the fall of 2017, to 1,900 people in the fall of 2018, to just over 1,800 people in the fall of 2019. This has resulted in our weekly offertory gifts decreasing by 19% over the past year after many people died, moved away, or stopped coming to church altogether. I have a long-term plan to reverse these trends and it starts with evangelization. Making saints is our mission and we accomplish that by worshiping God, serving others and forming disciples of Jesus. Let’s start with the worshiping God portion: Our Church can seat 1,100 people but our largest Mass only has about 500 worshipers. Several of our weekend Masses regularly have under 250 worshipers. When we have so few people in such a large space our Eucharistic celebration slowly becomes fragmented and lifeless. In order to remedy this, we are going to restructure our Mass schedule and move from six weekend Masses to four and from two daily Masses to one. Given our declining numbers, I’ve been told by diocesan administration that we need to begin operating our parish with just two full-time priests rather than the four you have been accustomed to for so long. Over the next six months, I will be dialoguing with staff, councils, parish groups and all of you as to what our new Mass schedule might look like in 2021. We have a great opportunity to reverse these trends and start forming lifelong disciples of Jesus. It all starts with a vibrant Holy Mass. Saints Columbkille and Michael the Archangel pray for us. Never forget, the Lord is with us, always!
PARISH MISSION STATEMENT As missionary disciples of Jesus, being formed as a community through Scripture and Sacraments, we are sent into the world to joyfully proclaim the Gospel with our lives.
(Mission is about what we do now…)

FATHER JAMIE’S HEALING HUMOR Two women from the backwoods met at a church social. During their conversation, one said to the other that she had cured her son of biting his nails. “How’d you do that?” the other wondered. Replied the first, “I made him wear shoes.” (from AMUSING GRACE by King Duncan. 1993). Our God is a God of surprises. Jesus, not needing to be baptized, is indeed baptized by John at the Jordan River. This merely makes holy the waters of our own baptism, which we need for salvation. Sometimes we feel surprised that we need baptism. Truth is, we have sinned; baptism brings us into the family of Jesus, receiving the inheritance of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and becoming sisters and brothers of the Lord.
WEEKLY SCRIPTURE PASSAGE Let us pray together the verses from the prophet Isaiah. As we pray, keep this in mind – that God has taken hold of our hand and is calling us to be a light to the world and to share the Gospel. “I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.” Isaiah 42:6-7

FINANCIAL NEWS AND NOTES2019 END-OF-YEAR CONTRIBUTION
STATEMENTS: For the second year now, the parish office has been tracking the contributions of registered parishioners who donated by use of their envelopes or checks in order to produce the required statement of these contributions for tax purposes. Checks received after January 1, 2020 but dated in 2019 will not be included in the 2019 contribution report. These checks will be credited in 2020. The date of the check does not control when it is recorded. The initial offering envelopes are no longer part of your envelope packets. Any money that was given towards initial offering will be used for regular offertory contributions. When writing checks to the parish, please write out the entire year 2020 in the date in order to avoid any potential fraud. By writing out the date as 01/01/20 (January 1, 2020), the year can be fraudulently changed to 2021, or any other date in this century. Instead, make sure when you're dating documents in 2020 that you write the year out in full, to protect yourself against fraud. Please contact the parish office at (216) 524-1987 and give us your name, envelope number, address and phone number and you will be added to a list in order to receive a year-end statement of your 2019 contributions. If you donated through Faith Direct, you will automatically receive a contribution statement from them, and you don’t have to call the office. FAITH DIRECT ELECTRONIC GIVING: Many of you are aware and take advantage of the convenience of electronic giving to our parish and we are grateful for that. Right now, over 300 families contribute to St. Columbkille using Faith Direct and we would love to have you do so as well! Here’s why: Faith Direct enables you to make your Church contributions through either direct debit from your checking/savings account or through your credit/debit card. No more writing checks or searching for envelopes on the way out the door. Now you can apply the convenience of direct debit to your parish offerings in much the same way as you may now use it to make your mortgage, car or tuition payments. Faith Direct also offers you personalized offertory cards to replace your envelopes for the collection basket. Please visit www.faithdirect.net to enroll securely online using our parish code: OH668. Thank you to everyone who contributed time, talent or treasure to St. Columbkille Parish in 2019! WEEKLY OFFERTORY: The offertory collection for the weekend of January 4th and 5th was $17,221.25. The second half of December's Faith Direct contributions were $6,548.50. In December, we received $8,935.00 through Faith Direct and $49,578.00 in envelope contributions for Christmas. Thank you for your generosity to our parish!
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL “Do you want Our Lord to give you many graces? Visit Him often. Do you want Him to give you few graces? Visit Him seldom. Visits to the Blessed Sacrament are powerful and an indispensable means of overcoming the attacks of the devil. Make frequent visits to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and the devil will be powerless against you.” St. John Bosco The Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, located in the Parish Center, is open daily between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. You DO NOT need an appointment. The Chapel is open to scheduled adorers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Anyone interested in spending a specific hour each week with Jesus, please call Scott or Amanda at (216) 310-6831.
ST. COLUMBKILLE NEEDS YOUR HELP Many visitors stop into the Adoration Chapel each day to enjoy time with Jesus. However, in order to keep our Chapel thriving, we need committed adorers for the below hours so our Lord will never be left alone. Can you find one hour a week, or every other week as a gift to our Lord?MORNING: Thursday, 10:00-11:00 a.m.; AFTERNOON: Sunday, 12:00-1:00 p.m. and 3:00-4:00 p.m.; Thursday, 4:00-5:00 p.m.; Friday, 5:00-6:00 p.m.EVENING: Friday, 6:00-7:00 p.m. and 8:00-9:00 p.m.; Saturday, 7:00-8:00 p.m. NIGHT: Monday, 3:00-4:00 a.m.; Thursday, 3:00-4:00 a.m.; Friday, 1:00-2:00 a.m.; Saturday, 12:00-1:00 a.m. and 4:00-5:00 a.m. Call Scott and Mandy Effertz at (216) 310-6831 to find an hour that best fits your schedule. Please know, with help from the Adoration Team, subs are always available if you are unable to cover your hour.
R.C.I.A.! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is underway. However, it is always the right time to respond to the Lord’s invitation to a full life. If you or someone you know is interested to learn more about the Catholic faith or to explore life in the Church, contact Fr. Michael at (216) 524-1987. Inquiries that begin now will most likely join next year’s formal RCIA instruction. However, every person’s journey is unique, so there’s no reason not to begin a relationship with the Church, even just to have a conversation! Nowhere does Jesus say, “See me next year.” Call today!

YOUTH AND SCHOOL NEWS
"LET THE CHILDREN COME TO ME!” Mt 10:14 Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is now at St.
Columbkille! All children 4-8 years old are invited
to attend Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) every Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. Mass. There is no fee, sign-up or registration! Every Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. Mass, the priest celebrant invites the children to gather in front of the altar. The children, guided by a CLOW leader, then process to the church basement. Once assembled in the basement, the CLOW leader proclaims the readings of the day to the children in a way they can more easily understand. The children rejoin their families in church at the beginning of the offertory. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a great opportunity for the children of our parish to attend Mass with their families while, at the same time, hear the work of God explained in an age appropriate way. If you have any questions, please contact Shari Chmura at (216) 524-1987 or schmura@stcolumbkilleparish.org.

SCS LIBRARY NEEDS YOUR HELP! Please support the growth and learning of the students of St. Columbkille School by volunteering your time at St. Columbkille School Library. There are many tasks with which the library could use your
help. For example:• Do you like to check books in with a scanner or
organize and shelve books? If you like to put things in order in your house, this may be the task for you!
• Are you great at wrapping gifts or like to cover books? We have new books that benefit from being covered in contact paper…this task can be done in the comfort of your own home. (Thanks, Barb, from last year. You are welcome to help again.)
• Do you like to read to children? (Martha, thank you!) If you have a talent or a task that you would like to share/perform, please contact the school librarian at dfistek@stcolumbkilleschool.org. Thanks in advance and to those of you who helped last year…YOUR SUPPORT MADE/WILL MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE! You are welcome and encouraged to join us at SCS Library as a volunteer in order to support the success of the students during the 2019-2020 school year and beyond! Virtus training required for tasks/volunteering completed in school/with students.

DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS(St. Therese of the Child Jesus)
O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home and abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests; For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying priests; For the souls of your priests in purgatory.
But most of all, I recommend to You the priests dearest to me;The priest who baptized me;The priests who absolved me from my sins; The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; The priests who taught and instructed me;All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way.
O Jesus, keep them all close to Your heart,And bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen.
NEW PARISHIONERS We welcome our newest members to the Saint Columbkille Parish family:
Giang LaiMr. & Mrs. Michael Schwark
EPIPHANY HOME BLESSING For the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, the Church has a special blessing for homes, designated for this time of year. The head of the household prays while members hold lighted candles: “O Lord, Almighty God, bless this house that it may be a shelter of health, purity, self-
conquest, humility, goodness, mildness, obedience to your commandments, and thanksgiving to you. O God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, may your blessing come upon this house and among all who live here and remain with us, forever, through Christ our Lord, Amen.” The head of the household, or one of the children, inscribes with chalk on the door of the entrances to the home, “+ 20 + G + M + B + 20”the New Year and initials of the traditional names of the Magi, “Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar.” The entire home (each room) is sprinkled with Holy Water.
