Non-destructive testing or NDT is a wide group of analysis techniques used in industry to
evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage. The terms
Non-destructive examination (NDE), Non-destructive inspection (NDI), and Non-destructive evaluation
(NDE) are also commonly used to describe this technology. Because NDT does not permanently alter the
article being inspected, it is a highly valuable technique that can save both money and time in product
evaluation, troubleshooting, and research.
ESPRAT Technicians are capable of providing the
following NDT related service SERVICES
NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING
Internal & External Vessel and Tank Inspection/Surveys
(ABS, DNV, Bureau Veritas & Lloyds Register) Confined space,
hazardous environment inspections and ship special surveys.
>
Visual Inspection
It is a common method of quality control, data acquisition, and
data analysis. Used in maintenance of facilities, means inspection
of equipment and structures using either or all of raw human
senses such as vision, hearing, touch and smell and/or any
non-specialized inspection equipment.
>
Close Visual Inspection
As the name suggests, this is a detailed and close up visual exam-
ination of welds / structures / vessels / pipework. The qualifications
applicable to CVI can be both PCN or CSWIP. Typically, CVI would
be used to identify areas requiring more in-depth inspection.
Examples of its application could be identification of pipework
likely to require further wall thickness checks (see Ultrasonic
Testing), newly fabricated assemblies require CVI pre-further NDT
(MPI/UT), in-situ structural assemblies require a CVI to detect
fatigue induced cracking prior to further NDT (ECI/MPI), etc.
>
Remote Visual Inspection or Remote Digital Video Inspection
RDVI, is a form of visual inspection which
uses visual aids including video technology to
allow an inspector to look at objects and
materials from a distance because the objects
are inaccessible or are in dangerous environ-
ments, also allowing for images to be viewed
remotely by a 3rd party whilst the inspector is
operating the equipment at the worksite. RVI
is also a specialty branch of non-destructive
testing (NDT)

servicesNDT
Eddy-current Testing
It is one of many electromagnetic testing
methods used in nondestructive testing
(NDT) making use of electromagnetic
induction to detect and characterize surface
and sub-surface flaws in conductive materi-
als.
>
Magnetic particle Inspection (MPI)
MPI is a process for detecting surface and
slightly subsurface discontinuities in ferro-
magnetic materials such as iron, nickel,
cobalt, and some of their alloys. The
process puts a magnetic field into the part.
The presence of a surface or subsurface
discontinuity in the material allows the mag-
netic flux to leak. Ferrous iron particles are
then applied to the part. If an area of flux
leakage is present, the particles will be
attracted to this area. The particles will build
up at the area of leakage and form what is
known as an indication. The indication can
then be evaluated to determine what it is,
what may have caused it, and what action
should be taken, if any.
>
Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI)
DPI also known as penetrant testing (PT), is
a widely applied and low-cost inspection
method used to locate surface-breaking
defects in all non-porous materials (metals,
plastics, or ceramics). The penetrant may
be applied to all non-ferrous materials and
ferrous materials, although for ferrous com-
ponents magnetic-particle inspection is
often used instead for its subsurface detec-
tion capability. DPI is used to detect casting,
forging and welding surface defects such as
hairline cracks, surface porosity, leaks in
new products, and fatigue on in-service
components.
>
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
This is a family of non-destructive testing
techniques based on the propagation of
ultrasonic waves in the object or material
tested to detect internal flaws or to charac-
terize materials. A common example is
ultrasonic thickness measurement, which
tests the thickness of the test object, for
example, to monitor pipework or vessel wall
corrosion.

ROAV Inspection(Remotely Operated Aerial Vehicles)
The applications for this technology are
limitless. Used as a first line visual aid to
investigate and inspect any potential areas
of concern, to plan for an upcoming turna-
round or as a plant 3D and 4D mapping
tool, the HD video and still imagery our fleet
of aircraft can produce, is second to none.
Utilising this technology limits downtime
due to the non-intrusive nature of the
inspection and the remote location of our
pilots in relation to where the inspection is
taking place, allowing for increased uptime
in plant and operations.

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
Sponge Blasting
An innovative commercial and industrial blasting technology. This dry, low dust process requires minimal containment,
reduces downtime and offers a wide range of surface profiles. Reusable Sponge Media contain different sizes and
grades of abrasive (or none) for use on surfaces ranging from the toughest to the most sensitive. This system offers fast,
dry, clean, safe and flexible industrial surface preparation at a total job cost often lower than traditional grit (garnet)
blasting.
>
Grit Blasting
Abrasive grit blasting is a surface treatment process widely used in a variety of different industries with many diverse
purposes. Abrasive blasting is the process by which an abrasive media is accelerated through a blasting nozzle by
means of compressed air. The abrasive used varies based on the surface treatment required. Common abrasives used
include:• Steel shot
• Steel grit
• Glass bead
• Crushed glass
• Aluminum oxide
• Silicon carbide
• Plastic
• Walnut shell
• Corn cob
• Baking soda
• Ceramic grit
• Copper slag
Media selection is a crucial decision in the engineering of abrasive blasting processes. The different media types have
different hardness, shape, and density, and each is available in a wide range of particle sizes to give the desired surface
profile finish prior to paint application.
>
UHP – Hydro Blasting
Uses for Ultra-High Pressure water blasting include - Tank cleaning, hull cleaning,
marine growth removal, concrete preparation, concrete removal, paint removal, rust
removal, offshore maintenance, gypsum removal, grease removal, decontamina-
tion and simply returning surfaces to bright metal.
>
Drill Pipe Cleaning
ESPRAT carries a range of mobile cleaning equipment dedicated to tubular goods. We are
able to carry out both wet and dry cleaning. Our diesel powered mobile UHP machines can
be transported anywhere so are ideal for even the remotest locations. Our unique dry
cleaning machines, which have been designed in-house eliminate the environmental
concerns associated with wet blasting and achieve a finish that has only ever been associ-
ated with fixed cleaning machines, having the ability to return surfaces to bare metal. All drill
pipe cleaning machinery is operated by our trained and competent personnel.
Our team will advise on the benefits of each method of preparation in relation to the specific
work scopes.

Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM)
ESPRAT has been a full and active Operator and Training company of IRATA (Industrial Rope Access Trade Association) since 2002 and has been deploying Rope Access Technicians to some of the most remote places around the globe throughout that time. Our Technicians are selected for their core maintenance skills/qualifications and then introduced to the working at height environment. This strategy allows us the strategic advantage of being able to provide high quality, cost efficient and safe services both on the ground and in some of the most difficult to reach areas of your facility.
Most importantly for our clients, the technique allows
rapid deployment and dismantling of the access system
which will cause minimal disruption to their operation.BENEFIT
ROPE ACCESS TECHNOLOGY
Why use Rope Access over Scaffolding?
When you require maintenance or inspections at height on any structure above 5m, there are usually only two options
available for access: scaffolding hire or a rope access service provider. There are costs that are involved with any kind
of maintenance, so it’s important to look at the two options carefully to see why rope access is so much more affordable.
>
Cost of Materials
If scaffolding is going to be used, then a large part of the quote will involve high equipment rental and manpower costs.
There are also bedding constraints, deck space, manual handling (potential strains) and subsistence expenses to be
considered. Not only that, once the scaffolding is in place, only then can the maintenance or trades persons gain
access.
When ESPRAT gives a quote, however, there are no hidden expenses to consider besides the cost of the technicians,
rope access equipment and the materials for doing the job. In simple terms, you get safe high access and qualified
maintenance technicians in one.
As a result, the costs are considerably lower. With scaffolding, the higher from the ground the scope of work is, the more
expensive it gets. With ESPRAT, the costs don’t escalate since equipment and manpower rates are fixed. In short, the
higher the elevation of work, the more attractive rope access becomes.
>
Time Costs Money
The longer a job takes; the more money it costs the business. This may not directly correlate with the quote but more in
the inconvenience. If a job takes a month because of scaffolding and other problems, it becomes an obstruction for
clients. As a result, business may be lost during the times that maintenance is taking place.
When ESPRAT are used, the technicians are on ropes safely anchored to a fixed point. Rather than working from the
ground up, they work from top to bottom. This means that there’s no interference for people on the ground level, so it’s
business as usual.
Rope access is the more cost-efficient way to handle maintenance because there is simply less equipment and
inconvenience and this is reflected in the bottom line of a quote. Instead, you save money and get a safer, higher quality
end result.
