Protista and Fungi

Fungus-Like Protists

fungus-like protists absorb nutrients from living or dead organisms. Ex. Water Mold

Fungi

• Characteristics:– Spore producing organisms that absorb nutrients

from the environment.– Placed in their own Kingdom – Fungi Kingdom– Consumers– Can not move

Decomposers

• Fungi get nutrients by secreting digestive juices onto a food source.

• Dead matter• All are made up of eukaryotic cells• Contain a cell wall made of chitin.

Unicellular and multicellular

• Many Multicellular Fungi contain fungal filaments called hyphae.

• Most hyphae in a fungus form mycelium which makes up most of the fungus.

Different Kinds of Fungi

• Fungi are classified based upon their shape and the way they reproduce.

• Three main groups:1. Zygote Fungi2. Sac Fungi3. Club Fungi

Important Decomposers

• Important decomposers of wood. The nutrients in wood could not recycle itself.

• Why is this important for our ecosystem?

Sac Fungi

• Reproduce sexually and asexually• Sexual reproduction spores are developed

within a microscopic sac that releases them. • Yeast are asexual (budding) and are single

celled.
