In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Media conventions that were used in our film:

• Sound and Music – Popular Song, voice over.• Editing – Tailored editing to the music. • Setting, mise-en-scene – Interior and exterior shots,

British settings. • Characterisation – Conventional characters for rom-com.• Narrative structure – Introduction of Characters with

Voice over and title cards. Story into montage.• Advertisement – Labels such as apple Mac, Extra gum &

Sony Ericson. • Casting – Good looking British actors.

Media conventions that we developed in our film:

• Mise-en-scene – We took that playing in the park convention that little bit further.

• Internet – Modern aspects compared to “You’ve got mail”. Use of dating sites.

Media conventions that we challenge in our film:

• Feminist and un-feminist juxtaposition – Lucy is independent but she “wants love”, very stereotypical.

• Safety on the internet – The message our film sends

Conventions we use, develop and challenge in our Poster:

•Use – Convections from other poster “I could never be your woman” and “The Holiday”, Main characters faces large and focus point. The use of font, standard for film posters, the writing at the bottom. Technology such as air brushing. Use of external media quote from Empire

•Develop - We developed the colour scheme, used a British setting, outdoors, green’s browns and yellows used a lot.

•Challenge – We didn’t use the typical “lean effect” Stayed away from tacky fonts and pictures.

Conventions that we use, develop and challenge in our magazine cover

• Use – Appropriate layout, fonts and terminology

• Develop – Out of character photo promotion of actors and actresses. Shows them in a different light however keeps a running theme. Continuity.

• Challenge - We find often that these magazines are aimed at men, and to promote a Rom-com on the front of one is very daring. In featuring a predominantly female film on the cover, we are hitting a niche in the market that needs to be filled.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

• Mise-en-scene – The same use of mise-en-scene in the poster and the film link them together nicely keeping continuity. However the change of scenery on the magazine cover is an effective and refreshing change for the audience to see the characters in a new light.

• Same title used anchors each text.• Valentine theme continued throughout the texts.

What have we learnt from audience feedback?

• Film :- Light in indoor shots: We can improve this by changing

the brightness on the apple Macs to save us re-filming. - Dialogue too quiet in parts: Adjusted the sound.• Magazine cover:- Red colour problems: Alter colour. - Grammar: Very important, professional.- Price, currency: Predominately British.• Poster:- None!
