• “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.”

• You have just a few seconds to make an impression.

• How you dress and how you look is IMPORTANT. Take cues from the most successful employees in the company. Notice how they dress and act.

Introduction

• Be aware of your appearance and its impact on those around you.

• Consistency is essential. You will not project a good image by dressing well just for the interview or just a few times a week and then showing up dressed for the weekend the rest of the week.

Instruction – Key Ideas

• Wear appropriate, clean clothing and accessories.

• Revealing shirts, nose rings, obvious tattoos, etc. may not be acceptable in many work situations.

• Also, it is not appropriate for men to wear hats inside buildings.

• Wrinkled clothing, sagging pants, and shirttails hanging out are in poor taste at work and definitely for an interview.

Key Ideas

Some places have adopted “business casual” dress code policies. What is business casual? It can vary, but there are a few guidelines: • Business casual is not sloppy or shabby. • For women, business casual attire includes: simple skirts and

slacks, cotton shirts, sweaters, blazers, and low-heeled shoes or boots.

• For men, acceptable business casual attire includes: khaki trousers, sport shirts with collars,, sweaters, or sport jackets, casual loafers or lace-up shoes.

• In dressing appropriately for business casual men and women should not wear jeans, athletic shoes, or anything tight fitting.

Dress for Success Collage Project

• Students will work in small teams of 3-4 students each of the same gender.

• Each group will prepare a poster with two columns.

• In one column students will display several examples of interview and workplace appropriate clothing for their gender.

• In the other column students will display several examples of clothing that would not be appropriate for an interview or the workplace.

Closure

Students will share their opinions and thoughts of how they can express their personality and individuality while dressing appropriately for employment situations.
