The architectural heritage of Iraq largely con-sists of buildings made of earth and bricks. This is especially true of southern Iraq. At the sametime, the high groundwater level, the associ-ated salinisation of the soil and the extreme cli-matic conditions influence the preservation ofthe architecture. The conservation and resto-ration of archaeological and historic buildings therefore requires careful planning and main-tenance strategies. The example of ongoing conservation projects in Uruk and other pla-ces in southern Iraq illustrates the challenges of preserving this outstanding cultural heritage.
