34 Culture Questions to MN & Beijing

This is an observational project about cultural differences

between Beijing and Minneapolis since I move to Minne-

apolis just two months ago (08/2010). I record all those life

details and paused questions about cultural differences both

to Minneapolis side and Beijing side. Topics on the spreads

are related and the phenomena, in some way are contradic-

tory. Question for each page state as a dialogue between

these two cultures. The book is divided into four parts

Clothes, Food, Shelter and Transportation, which is a four-

word idiom “yi shi zhu xing” describes life in China.

A Little Ball and The Line

Constriction accompanies our whole life. Especially in mid-

dle and high schools, students have to obey a lot of rules

and principles. Sometimes those limitations seem unrea-

sonable and strip freedom from students. However, the goal

of those restrictions is to guide a correct direction and lead

an easier way for students to grow up. The story in this pro-

ject is about a little ball that lives on a line and wants to get

rid of the everyday restrictions that bind it to line. I have

created both a book with pictures and typography, and an

animation to experiment with the ways that my ideas can

be portrayed through the story.

The Traveler

This is a Illustration book of a story about a traveler from

a remote planet who wanted to visit Human’s planet- the

Earth. He likes people from the Earth. However, he has a

difficult time in understanding money which leads a result

of “rich & poor” people. He felt people on Earth are suffering

from pain. Thus he decide to bring a gift to Earth - an amaz-

ing machine that can produce anything.People use that ma-

chine to get whatever they like and everyone forget about

what money is.

The motion graphic piece in this water project is targeting

on educating people about the fact that almost all Chinese

words that have three-dot are related to water. The story

book in this project is a about “water” and is narrated by 21

Chinese phrases (42 single words in total). Each water re-

lated character has its own meaning, however, by combin-

ing with other words, they change their meaning or turn to

have a more specific meaning. So, readers can develop their

own understanding of the story by catching the meaning of

21water related characters.

Within a Box-A visual Study of

Chinese Characters

By majoring in graphic design, I formed my own way of

looking at the Chinese language system that I grew up with.

It is stimulating to view certain Chinese characters in a to-

tally visual and imaginable way. The idea of this series of

booklets starts from a study of visual elements in the Chi-

nese language. Chinese characters originated from hiero-

glyphs. Though time and space changed the way that mod-

ern Chinese characters appear, there are image-based word

systems that reflect Chinese characters. Because of the

huge amount of characters in Chinese language, we seldom

sit back and think about the whole visual system and con-

nect them together.

What I am trying to do in this project is look for systematic

possibilities within my personal understanding of Chinese

characters. There are five books in this series. One of the

text books explains all of the theories and ideas of these sys-

tems, while the other four books are separate studies of “dot

elements”, “line elements”, “symmetrical elements” and

“shape elements” in Chinese characters. The whole series

connects together, yet each book builds on it’s own unique

system and can stand on its own.

By studying and examining the meaning of each visual

element and revealing these perspectives as systems,

not only do I hope to inspire new possibilities of under-

standing the Chinese language system, but also hope to

generate contemplation about how the relationship of

personal experience and culture affects our comprehen-

sion of text and image.

Time slides away in a flash aroma

Never tried to rethink about past,

the fragile memory is powerless to support the complete sky of imagination.

While reading those texts from oneself,

analyzing the mind picture of memory, it touched the deepest emotions.

Those “long time no see” and “once seen before” scenes

lead a restate of every past monument.

It is the restatement of people who stays deep in heart;

the restatement of places where brought the best happiness and illusions,

the restatement of events that happened but would never appeared again;

the restatement of those abstract, slightly feelings float in the air.

Sometimes life has such a wide dimension;

because one would easily been separated by time and space.

Sometimes life is also narrow and limited;

because the images appealed by words is just

paragraphs by paragraphs of past memories.

How many paragraphs could one gain

plus all the time that would left in future?

Trying to prepare what to do, how to see,

where to go and whom to talk in the whole life.

When would one save enough time prepare to

show the memory movie that will easily slide away?
