„(Female) Information Scientist“

A project only for girls

• First started in 2000• Relaunched in 2001 and 2002

• Three years‘ initial vocational training• Officially recognized certificate (IHK)

w w w . t u v . c o m

Reasons for the project:• Less than 10 per cent of information scientists in Germany are women.• Girls do not tend to choose professions where they think they are left alone with a large group of boys. • Girls are often less self-confident than boys, particularly in mixed groups with a large majority of boys studying scientific or technical subjects.• There is empirical evidence that girls perform better in groups without males; they feel less pressure in such groups.• Girls have their own approach to the learning process, they learn in a different way (they are more careful than boys, do not simply try but want to understand etc...).

w w w . t u v . c o m

Our experience with the project:• Surprisingly or not, many Girls do not like to learn in groups without any males.• Companies tend to accept women as information scientists, even if they are aware of the fact that pregnancy may interrupt their female employees‘ career. • Information science seems to be a difficult subject, as about 40 per cent of all (male and female) students fail to pass the final examination in Berlin.• .• Girls have their own approach to the learning process, they learn in a different way (they are more careful than boys, do not simply try but want to understand etc...).

w w w . t u v . c o m

Final remarks:• The project is financed from a mix of sources: ESF, public funds of Berlin and private (company) funding.• The participants‘ contract on training is concluded with TÜV Akademie. • The training is implemented in co-operation between „Oberstufenzentrum“ (secondary training centre), companies and TÜV Akademie.• The course is accompanied by supplementary subjects like communication training, project management and others.
