TheInternationalCriminalCourt(ICC)hastodayissuedarrestwarrantsforMoammerGadaffi,Saif-el-IslamGadaffiandAbdullaSenussiontwochargesofcrimesagainsthumanity:murder,andpersecution.
LawyersforJusticeinLibya(LFJL)welcomesthisdecisionandstronglybelievesthattheissuanceof
thesewarrantspubliclysignalstotheregimethatimpunitywillnotbetoleratedfortheperpetratorsofcrimesagainsthumanityandthoseresponsibleforwidespreadatrocities.LFJLcanconfirmthroughits
researchonthegroundthatthereisevidencethatcrimesagainsthumanityhavebeencommitted.
ThearrestwarrantsfollowtheapplicationmadebyICCProsecutorLuisMoreno-Ocampoon16May
2011,followingtheunprecedentedunanimousreferralbytheUNSecurityCounciltotheProsecutorof
theICCofthesituationinLibyaunderUNSecurityResolution1970.Thespeedofboththereferraland
theissuanceofthearrestwarrantssignifiesthecollectivewilloftheinternationalcommunitytowork
towardajust,legitimateanddemocraticfuturefortheLibyanpeopleaprospectwefirmlybelievecan
onlybeachievedthroughthetransparencyofanimpartialandfairjudicialprocess.
MoammerGadaffi,Saif-el-IslamGadaffiandAbdullaSenussimustnowsurrenderthemselvestofacetrialattheICC.Iftheydonotdoso,theLibyanauthoritieshavealegalobligationunderUNResolution
1970toimplementthewarrantsandtoensurethateachisarrestedandextraditedtoTheHague.
Everycountryhasanobligationtodenythosenamedinthearrestwarrantssafehavenand,iftheyseek
toentertheterritoryofsuchcountry,toarrestthemandsurrenderthemtotheICC.Inparticular,LFJL

welcomesthenewsofTunisiasaccessiontotheRomeStatute,andcallsonitssupportshouldanyof
thosechargedintheICCswarrantsseektofleethroughorgotogroundinTunisianterritory.
LFLJseesthisprocessasanimportantfirststeptowardsLibyabecomingasocietygovernedbyruleof
law.LFJLiscommittedtodefendingrightsofallLibyans,andwillcontinuetosupportalllawful
prosecutionofthoseresponsibleforhumanrightsviolations.
