Preserving a Pacer for the Future

Railcar Association AGM1st October 2011

Aim

• To preserve at least one representative of the Pacer family of railbuses (Classes 142-144) for future generations:

i. Preservation and operation of a Pacer-type railbus

ii. Establish and maintain a collection of Pacer-related documents and artefacts, as both a historical record and as an archive for enthusiasts and preservationists.

iii. Improve public awareness of the Pacer-type railbuses

Who are the Pacer Preservation Society?

• Relatively new addition to the preservation scene• Formed in January 2011• Alan Wilson, the Class 58 Preservation Group’s

membership secretary decided to form a dedicated society for the Pacers

• Such a society had been proposed by enthusiasts prior to this but not actually done.

• Membership figure: 20 (Sept 2011) • Well visited website:

Retain original interiors(Brown floor, parcel areas)

Status Operational in Northern Rail fleet

Built 1985

Preservation reasons:

- Expo 86 exhibition in Vancouver. - Margaret Thatcher is known to have taken a short ride onboard whilst there

Status Operational in Northern Rail fleet

Preservation reasons:

Doyen of the Class 143

Status Operational in Arriva Trains Wales fleet

Preservation reasons:

- Class 144 doyen

Status Operational in Northern Rail fleet

Unit Number: 142059

Entered service 1986

Preservation reasons:

Unit scrapped following Liverpool Lime Street crash in early 1990s but cab front still exists

Status Cab front stored in Manchester
