MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER
I aim to create a pipeline of women in business, politics, STEM, the arts, and
other fields where women and minorities are underrepresented. Since
2010, over 1,000 girls throughout the DC metro area have attended our
programs and been inspired by the role models who have volunteered to
mentor girls at various programs, such as STEAM camps, career
conferences, networking luncheons, work site field trips, and leadership
workshops. These programs have exposed girls to possible career
opportunities and provided them with the tools to follow a pathway to
accomplishing their goals. I thank the GIRL Board members, individual
donors, sponsors, and partners who have helped me fulfill my passion, and
I look forward to everyone's continued support.
"The whole community created by the GIRL program makes me feel that I’m
substantially prepared to pursue STEM-related professions in the future with
the skills I’ve gained and resources available to me. I truly believe that these
are all experiences that I may not have had in my everyday life without being
part of an organization such as GIRL."
A GIRL Participant
Today, many girls face challenges of peer pressure,
low self-esteem, and lack of vision for the future. It is
my passion that girls know their dreams are possible
by exposing them to women of all ages who are
impacting their workplaces, communities, and the
nation.

HISTORYGIRL began in 2009 when Danielle Blunt Craddock and two sta members at the Pinn Community Center led GIRL Talk meetings for a small group of middle and high school girls who shared concerns and stories about school, relationships, family, and career goals. Danielle decided to start a nonprofit to address the concerns that the girls shared during GIRL Talk meetings. GIRL was incorporated in April 2010 and on June 5, 2010 hosted its first workshop titled, “Fit and Fabulous,” which emphasized physical fitness and self-esteem. In December 2010, GIRL became a 501(c)(3) organization.
hosted monthly workshops on STEM, academic success strategies, preparation for college and careers, leadership development, healthy relationships, health and fitness, positive self-esteem, entrepreneurship, and social etiquette.
performed community service projects of collecting and donating holiday food baskets to the Alternative House: The Abused and Homeless Children’s Refuge (Second Story), collecting school supplies for back-to-school projects, making Christmas cards for residents of a local nursing home, and preparing care packages for children at Children's National Hospital and MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital.

created, with a Breaking the Cycle Endowment Grant from the Giving Circle of Hope, the Pathways to Careers program which mentored a group of high school girls in 2017. The program began with a networking luncheon where girls had an opportunity to meet women in a variety of career fields, learn about their paths to achieve their goals, and discover the required education and job responsibilities. The program participants also attended college preparation workshops, a career conference, and work site visits.
At the networking luncheon in 2018, BRG Communications staff presented a workshop designed to help girls develop personal elevator pitches and strategies for marketing themselves in person and on line.
established in 2017 a partnership with the Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) Computer Clubhouses and Tech Centers which brought together girls from the community centers throughout the county to join monthly GIRL meetings. At various community centers, GIRL offered an aviation camp in 2018, spring break camps in 2018 and 2019, and a monthly Saturday program since 2017 where the girls learned how to build a mobil app and create a podcast. GIRL has also provided scholarships for girls to attend the FOCUS camps and career conferences.
presented the Today's Girl, Tomorrow's Leaders program at Hammond Middle School in Alexandria with a grant from the Northern Virginia Business Women's Giving Circle in 2017. introduced its first middle school STEAM Spring Break camp in 2017 in partnership with Mason Game and Technology Academy and sponsored by STEM for HER. It combined digital art, programming, video game design, web page development, and entrepreneurship. By the end of the week, the girls had created a video game and web page and pitched their companies to a panel of guest judges. Girls studied digital art, fashion design technology, and forensic science at camps in 2018 and 2019.
offered a CSI STEM Camp in partnership with NOVA Systemic in June 2018 which was designed to develop students' interest in forensic science. Forensic Fun Sessions provided fun and educational presentations and real-life science labs and workshops that covered topics, such as fingerprints, chromatography, odontology, DNA, blood spatter analysis, firearms, evidence collection, and death investigation. The goal of the camp was to provide a mentoring opportunity and give students an advantage to see what it is like to work in the forensic science field.
introduced its fall STEM mini camps for middle school girls in 2018 at George Mason University in partnership with the Mason Game and Technology Academy sponsored by a grant from Verizon. At the App development camp, the girls learned how to create games by coding in Scratch and Unity.
presented its Career Exploration Series in the spring of 2019. The first session in partnership with Secure Tech360 introduced girls to career paths, education requirements for that career, strategies for securing internships, and writing winning essays and a standout resume. Session two in partnership with Women in Media presented strategies for turning your passion into a career, communicating in the workplace, handling stress, and producing a podcast.
introduced girls to music technology in fall 2019. The STEM mini camp hosted by Mix Major and sponsored in part by a grant from the Regal Foundation taught nineteen girls how to make beats and produce, edit, and remix electronic dance music. They also designed their own CD covers and finished the day with a listening party for their parents.

“Now I can see the road to my future much clearer. The path that once
was rough, unchartered, twisted and winding is now a paved, red
brick street with lanterns glowing along the side. Such clear vision has
resulted from attending the countless events hosted by GIRL. ”
“I appreciate what you are doing. This is such a wonderful opportunity
for the girls to learn from others, to network outside of their peer group,
and to give back. “- Parent of an 11th Grade Member
