UDL Academy 1 Overview
The goal of the UDL Academy is to establish a
team of school and district leaders who will
shape the learning environment so that it
addresses the variability of ALL learners,
including students with disabilities, English
language learners, and students.
CAST 2012
UDL Academy 1 Overview
Provide follow-up activities in the application of UDL
Support teams of instructional leaders who will collaborate to applying the principles of UDL aligned to the MTSS blueprint.

UDL Academy 1 Overview
District leaders will• Have the knowledge and skills necessary to
prepare for an implementation initiative.• Complete a resource map at the district level to
identify and leverage resources to support implementation of UDL.
• Develop procedures to measure progress to ensure that the project goals are being achieved.

UDL Academy 1 Overview
Classroom Educators will• Collaborate to develop 3 - 4 lessons to post & share
on UDL Exchange, an online digital environment for creating and sharing lessons. The lessons will include goals, assessments, methods, and materials that minimize learning barriers and maximize learning opportunities.

Q & A and Highlights
CAST 2012
Today’s Goal
To build understanding of UDL as a framework for designing learning experiences that align with the MTSS.
CAST 2012
Essential Question
How do you plan learning experiences that recognize the given variability of any group?
UDL Assumption: Variability is the Rule!
UDL Strategy: As you watch the film, think about implications for your practice.
CAST 2012
Think about strategies that you already use to address variability at the classroom, school, and/or district. Share with your team.
Reflection …
CAST 2012
UD: Planning for Variability
Clearing the path for someone with special needs, clear the path for all.
CAST 2012
Think about …
Talk to your elbow partner about how you benefit from something that is designed for someone in the margins.
Universal Design for Learning
is framework for designing learning experiences – from the beginning –
that enables all individuals to gain knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for learning.
NOTE: variability as the ‘rule’
UDL Beliefs1. Learners in any classroom represent a range of
variability
2. The goal of instruction is to develop “expert learners”
3. Curriculum needs to reflect the variability of all
learners
4. Learning occurs in the dynamic interaction of the
individual with the environment
CAST 2012
Think of an “Expert learner”” you know (even one in your class!):
Resourceful, knowledgeable.
Strategic, goal-directed.
Purposeful, motivated.
