From the Principal
Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Ursula Frayne Catholic College,
PRAYERFUL THOUGHTS FOR OUR YEAR 12 STUDENTS
I frequently give thanks for the wonderful students we have at Frayne and for the many and varied gi s each brings to our community. At this me of the year our throughts and prayers turn the young men and women in Year 12 who are embarking on their final few weeks of secondary educa on. During this me many will s ll be pondering very important decisions in rela on to their next logical step beyond school. During their me at the College, our Graduands would have heard about and reflected upon the the meaning of ‘success’ and the College value of ‘Excellence’. At a recent Senior School assembly to acknowledge academic achievements the student Execu ve Team delivered a very well considered and powerful address in which they shared their take on success and excel-lence with those in a endance. The following are excerpts from that address:
True success is found when you are a be er person today than you were yester-day. Simple as that. We should use ourselves as our own yards cks because we are our only fair comparison. There’s no sense in comparing yourself to other people when no one else has had the exact same struggles as you, or the same experiences, or made the same choices. I believe consistent self-improvement, day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month, by comparing yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who others are today, is the only good solu on, the only way up. To me, that is success. Even more - that is hope.

FRAYNE NEWS VOLUME 32 ISSUE 25 / TERM 3 WEEK 6 / 27 AUGUST 2021
From the Principal cont... Excellence isn’t just about receiving the highest mark or the best grades, excellence can be shown in a variety of ways and will vary from individual to individual. Excellence can be reached in sport, music or dance. We only have to look at the recent Tokyo Olympics to see the world’s best athletes who tried their hardest, represented their country with pride and achieved excellence. Some of the athletes may not have been the smartest, most academically gi ed people at their school, but they found their passion and worked hard to develop their talent. Success always comes with shortcomings and disappointments; Olympian Jessica Fox’s dream was to win a gold medal. She won a silver, a bronze and in a race, she was favourite to win, she came third. She could have let that stop her or quit, but she got back up and tried again and she fulfilled her lifelong ambi on of winning an Olympic Gold Medal. That is what success is all about, ge ng back up a er you’ve been knocked down or disappointed. You have heard us talk about trying your hardest and achieving your best, but it’s also important to look at how far you’ve come. At the start of the year, you might have been si ng on a ‘C’ for English and now you’re si ng on a ‘B’, that deserves to be celebrated just as much as achieving an ‘A’. Achieving excellence doesn’t necessarily mean ge ng one good grade on a test or winning one spor ng match; it is a commit-ment to taking full responsibility for your future and pu ng in a sufficient amount of effort in order to be er yourself every day. There will be mes where you will work hard, try your best and s ll come up short. But that’s okay! It’s finding the strength to get up, go back out there and try again. That is excellence. Just pu ng in a li le bit of extra effort can give you the results you want. It can turn a B into an A, a sketch into a piece of art, or a state me into a na onal me. I encourage you to go that li le bit further in everything you do, and if you stay consistent and commi ed, you will reap the results.
Extract from Student Execu ve Address: Archer Fabling (Head Boy) Alana Cianco (Head Girl) Jay Williams (Deputy Head Boy) Sophie Baharom (Deputy Head Girl)]
On behalf of the Frayne community, I remind our Year 12 students that as they embark on the final phases of their me at Frayne, there are plenty of people thinking of, encouraging and suppor ng them on their individual and collec ve quests towards excellence and success. I am sure that they appreciate that the best supports at this me is coming from each other, from their parents/family members and from our wonderful staff. We look forward to journeying these final weeks with and offer the following prayer for them.
Dear God, with our Year 12 students facing their last few months of secondary school, bless each one of them with strength and enthusiasm. May they tackle this final stretch of the term with energy and a strong commitment to succeed. May each con nue to do their personal best, giving all that they can give. Finally we call on the guidance of the Holy Spirit so that all their decisions will be well thought out, filled with good counsel and open to your Spirit. Amen.
The Catholic Performing Arts programme is underway and during the next month we will see students performing in the visual arts, music, and dance from all year groups across the College. Some performances are solo, and others are group entries. On Wednesday night the students in our dance programme performed at the Perth Conven on and Exhibi on Centre as part of this programme. Their performances were powerfully entertaining. This is a fabulous performance opportunity for all our rising stars, and I commend every student involved for their courage in ge ng on the stage.
CONGRATULATIONS While most Duncan Campus students recently enjoyed their Pupil Free Day, and possibly a chance to sleep‐in, four of our students proudly represented the College at the School Sport WA Secondary Schools’ Golf Championships at Lakelands Country Club. Well done to Zachary Murray, Tom Do (both Year 10) and Spencer and Jasper Inglis (both Year 9) for their dedica on and passion. With regards and best wishes. Mr Geoff Mills Principal

College Advisory Council Update As a member of the Advisory Council, you have an opportunity to par cipate in influen al and interes ng discussions on a wide range of strategic ma ers that have a bearing on the future of the school and our children. For example, at the August Advisory Council mee ng, there was further considera on of the exci ng plans for the Stage 13 development. The Council also received an overview of the recent successful audit undertaken to check compliance with registra on standards. Par cipa on on the Advisory Council is an excellent way to ‘give back’, using your skills and exper se to make a difference and assist in advising and making good decisions for the school community. I raise this for two reasons. First, a casual vacancy has arisen on the Advisory Council for the next few months and this provides an ideal opportunity to experience what it is like and consider whether you would like to make a longer term commitment. Second, there are several vacancies that will be filled at the AGM coming up in November. There is a special interest in a rac ng members to the Advisory Council who have backgrounds in design, building, construc on or planning for significant capital works. If you would like to express interest in the casual vacancy or becoming a longer term member of the Advisory Council, please contact the Principal, Geoff Mills. Mr Richard Miles Deputy Chair

Chaplain’s Reflection SAINTS AUGUSTINE AND MONICA
The Feast of St Augus ne of Hippo is celebrated on 28 August and the Feast of his mother, St Monica, on 27 August. It is unusual to celebrate the feast of mother and son one day a er the other but as we learn more about their lives, we discover a powerful story of love and faith.
"Our heart is restless un l it rests in God." This is one famous quote from St Augus ne in his book called Confes-sions, speaking about his life and his struggle to search for God. Over 30 years he tried to reform his life but in his weakness he prayed: "Covert me Lord, but can You wait un l tomorrow". However, what he could not accomplish with his own prayers, it was done by the prayers of his mother, St Monica. She tried to help her son but St Augus ne entered into a life of sin and immorality, rejec ng her on mul ple occasions, nevertheless she con nued to love, pray and nurture her son throughout his wayward me.
St Monica wept, prayed and sacrificed for her son for many years. Her greatest desire was to see the conversion of her son and God heard her prayers. St Augus ne become friends with St Ambrose, the Bishop of Milan, and started looking for Jesus in his life. He was bap sed and become a priest. He said: “Late have I loved You, O Beauty so ancient and so new; late have I loved You! You were within me, and I outside and in my unloveliness fell upon those lovely things you have made. You were with me and I was not with you. I was kept from you by those things, yet had they not been in you, they would not have been at all. You did call and cry to me and break open my deafness; and you did send forth your beams and shine upon me and chase away my blindness...I tasted you, and now hunger and thirst for you; you did touch me, and I have burned for your peace.”
Let us look at St Monica for an example of persistence because God will never abandon us. Never give up hope, keep praying, bring your loved ones up to the foot of the altar as Monica did. Later St Augus ne become a Bishop and one of the most important and influen al Church Fathers and he would pray for his mother as he celebrated Mass on the Altar.
