Barangay

From the word: BALANGHAY, BINIRAY, BALANGAY which means “a water

vehicle or boat”

Refers to an ETHNIC GROUP who migrated and rode together

Usually the group was named after their DATU BASIC unit of government during the Pre-Hispanic Period.

How to choose a Datu

1. AGE- the oldest of the group is the Datu

2. INHERITANCE- based on blood relations to the Datu (son or daughter of the datu)

3. EXTENT OF KNOWLEDGE- had enough knowledge of the customs and traditions of the tribe

4. PHYSICAL PROWESS; WEALTH

COUNCIL OF ELDERS or MAGINOOS

• Made the laws of the barangay

• Counselors of the Datu

• Participate in the trial of an individual accused

of certain crimes

UMALOHOKAN or TOWN CRIERS

o One who announces laws that has been promulgated by the Datu to the Barangay

TRIAL

• TRIAL BY DATU- DATU= JUDGE MAGINOOS= JURY• TRIAL BY ORDEAL- Boiling water and stone;

Lighted candle; Swimming underwater• TRIAL BY WAR- Fight it out until one gives up

Law or Legislative

• May be written or oral• Unwritten laws are spoken laws that is passed

by of course the word of mouth, and may be passed through generations

• Written laws are made by the Datu together with the council of elders as advisers

• Written laws are proclaimed by the umalohokans
