Evaluation of LMS 2003

• In 2003 bmukk evaluates several LMS*(Blackboard, IBT Server, ILIAS)

• In 2005 bmukk evaluates further LMS(now MOODLE and MS Class Server too)

What‘s Moodle?

• MOODLE (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment)is a free and open-source e-learning software platform, also known as a Course Management System, Learning Management System, or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Evaluation of LMS 2003

• In spring 2006 bmukk starts the eLearning-project edumoodle in association with education highway LINZ (Upper Austria)

• About 1700 entities of Moodle are ordered for free by hundreds of different educational institutes

eLearning-projects in Tyrol

• Because edumoodle is only financed till 2007/08 TSN (Tyrolean School Net) starts its own Moodle-Server for free

• Several Tyrolean schools are using this unique service

• At the same time PHT starts different workshops for the administration of Moodle installations and/or creation of courses

• Main problem is the lack of knowledge of image processing and/or file management

• So the creation of challenging courses needs a lot of practise in different techniques of ICT -> extremely time-consuming

• Many installations with just a few courses!

Further problem:• University Innsbruck uses

Blackboard as LMS (since March 2010 OLAT) and Moodle isn‘t accepted in academic fields in Tyrol

Stagnation

• were used for File-Management but not for Learning Management ->no motivation for their pupils

„Revival“ of Moodle

• In 2007/08 bmukk starts the new education-project NMS (Neue Mittelschule)

• TSN offers a regional Moodle-Server for all NMS in Tyrol. Each NMS has to nominate an eLearning-agent. Those teachers get a special training to incite their colleagues to use Moodle in their classes.

• PHT has its own Moodle-Server• Several departments respectively academics have

their own courses for the different branches of study at PHT

• In-house courses for the academics are also in Moodle

• Moodle ≠ File-Management• Moodle offers various possibilities of

communication (= time-consuming)• The management of PHT should force the

usage of eLearning• Possibility of location-independent courses

Using Web 2.0 Tools in education

• Document-management is much easier in different Online-platforms

• Social communities are the places where our students already stay and where they communicate with each other

• Less lectures by using podcasts

• Virtual courses by using screencasts and virtual classrooms

• Better education in eLearning for our students

• E-Portfolio instead of tons of paper
