TRANSCRIPT

Plot- Lilly, Fourteen year old girl, lives with dad T. Ray.

- In Sylvan, South Carolina

- Lilly’s mother Deborah Owen died when Lilly was four years old. She was killed by Lilly when her mother left the house and came back to get her things and lilly, T. Ray was fighting to make her stay and Lilly picked up her mothers gun she saw and while trying to give it to her mother, it went off and shot her mom.

T. Ray gets mad at the stupidest things and abuses Lilly and punishes her by making her put her knees on grit, which burns and is very painful.

- While Lilly and housekeeper Rosaleen go into town for Rosaleen to register to vote, three four white man harass her and swear at her and tell her she a dumb negro.

- Rosaleen Pours her snuff on the white mans shoe to show that she can write her name.

- Rosaleen gets beaten up by the Four white man and put into jail.

- They put her into the hospital to get fixed up.

- Lilly runs away from home to go rescue Rosaleen from being beaten up again by the awhite man.

- Lilly and Rosaleen manage to escape from the hospital by escaping out the hospital room window.

- Lilly’s mothers photo of a black Mary writes, “ Tiburon, SC. So Lilly thought of nowhere to go besides Tiburon .

- In Tiburon they see jars of honey with the same picture of the black Mary and go to the makers of the honey.

They end up at this house, the Boatwright sisters house. The oldest sister August lets them stay in there honey house. Lilly lied and said her father

died and her mother died and that they were going to her aunt in Virginia. Lilly and Rosaleen stay with

the 3 Boatwright sister, August, June and May.Lilly and Rosaleen work. With the sisters as to pay the sisters back. After this point they stay at the Boatwright sisters house throughout the novel. And she and Rosaleen develop a sister motherly

bond with the sisters. As she soon falls in love with a black boy that works with August.

Near the end of the novel, T. Ray finds where Lilly had run off to and comes to get her but she refuses to go back and that she is staying here with Rosaleen and the two Boatwright sisters. T. ray gives up his battle to make her come and lets h.er live at the Boatwright house, she soon after attends the same high school as Zachary Taylor is.

Setting- First setting is in Sylvan, South Carolina , small house in a peach farm.- Time, 1964

- Boatwright sisters house.- In Tiburon, South Carolina.- Time, 1964 - Very fancy and beatifully decorated house

Characters

Lilly Owen - Fourteen Years old - The novels protagonist and narrator - Born July fourth 1950 - Develops and matures a lot in the

novel.- Wants to become a writer.

Rosaleen Daise

- Late Thirties- Lilly’s Housekeeper, Nanny- Peach Picker on Lilly’s father farm- First Friend to Lilly- Proud, determined, courageous woman

August Boatwright

- Late Forties - Beekeeper and owner of honey business- Courageous and cultured woman - Was the nanny of Lilly's mother - Loving, caring person- Helps Lilly in finding herself and her

mothers past

June Boatwright- Stubborn and strong headed- Late Twenties - A very skilled cello player - A teacher at the nearby Black high

school.- Involved in a love affair with a teacher

from the school, named Neil. And refuses to marry him.

May Boatwright- Mid twenties - Extremely Sensitive and prone to

depression- Very friendly and caring- Had a twin sister that died and isn't the

same after her death.- Kills herself at the end of the novel.

T. Ray

- Lilly’s father - Owns peach farm- Bitter and very resentful man- Abusive man- Very lonely

Zachary Taylor

- Junior at the black High School- Ambitious - Wants to become a Lawyer- Lilly good friend and love interest.- Helps Lilly to develop a more positive

out look on life

Neil

- Early Thirties - June love interest and has proposed to

her a couple of times but got rejected- Honest, gentlemen- A teacher at the black High School

ConflictsHuman vs Human

- There is the conflict between Lilly and her father T. ray.

- T. ray is very abusive and is in the way of Lilly developing to become a woman and love and live.

- T. ray doesn’t show his love for Lilly and after her mother dies, Lilly becomes to hate her father.

Community vs Community

- The setting (time) is when the civil rights bill was signed and there were a lot of racist people, whites verses the blacks. The south states were very racist around the 1960 ‘s.

Internal ConflictLilly goes threw internal conflict throught most of the story about the loss og her mother and finding out about her mothers past and to figure out if the day her mother came back to get her things, did she also come back to get Lilly?

Character development The most development character was Lilly, as in the beginning of the novel she did not know much about her mother, had a whole where mother love was going to fit in and she felt she wasn’t not loved. After coming to the Boatwright house the sisters showed her how to be strong , be proud to be a woman, introduced her to a community of supportive, loving people. August inspires her to be more introspective, Zach inspires her to be more sensitive, and the bees inspire her to be more hardworking. By the love that the sisters and Rosaleen shows her, she feels that she no ,anger has a hole in her heart because she has three wonderful mother. After learning about her mothers past she able to move on and be happy. By the wend of the novel she matures into a young woman able to stand up for herself and that she has found her place in the world.
