Atlas Refuel, a partnership be-tween Atlas Disposal and Clean-world, was honored with the Business of the Year award at the
recent Alliance 20th Annual Awards Luncheon. The unique process converts food waste into natural gas through the largest anaerobic digester in the country. The gas-from-waste used in all Atlas Disposal trucks, burns so cleanly that it actually generates carbon credits and replaces nearly one million gallons of diesel fuel annually.
In accepting the award, General Manager Andrea Stephenson said that the process elimi-nates 100% of Greenhouse Gas emissions from landfilling food waste and results in significant cost savings. Dave Sikich, CEO of Atlas Disposal Industries, joined Andrea in accepting the award.
Other awards presented at the luncheon held in the Depot Park Conference Center included:
BEST INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT: Sacramen-to Community Development Dept. for cre-ating the Specific Plan for the Sacramento Center for Innovation.
BEST NEW DEVELOPMENT: St John’s Shelter for their new facility to house over 900 moth-ers and children a year.
BEST ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES, PUBLIC: County Environmental Management Dept. for removing over 1,100 tons of carpet debris from an unregulated carpet recycler on Fruitridge Blvd.
BEST ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES, PRIVATE: H.P. Hood, LLC for achieving zero waste by recycling 99.7% of all waste products.
SPECIAL RECOGNITION: Shawn Guttersen for his 19 years of active Board participa-tion and leadership in the solid waste industry while CEO of the Sacramento Re-cycling and Transfer Station.

The Power Inn Alliance appreciates the ongoing invest-ment of Cohen Durrett, LLP and their commitment to Alliance members since January 2009. Through contin-ued investment as a “Picnic at the Park” sponsor and donated service hours as an educator for the popular Labor Law Seminars, Cohen Durrett, LLP plays an active
membership role.
A prime example of donated service hours is David Co-hen, Partner, at Cohen Durrett, LLP. Cohen has been do-
nating his billable time sharing valuable knowledge since May 2010—with the first Labor Law Seminar series. He has a front-row seat to new laws and regulations
which address the current concerns surrounding today’s businesses and labor relations.
“Our goal is to help businesses avoid legal problems. Business owners who are informed can make better business decisions,” maintains Cohen. Every year businesses are faced with new laws and regulations—
the Labor Law Seminar series helps to de-mystify and clarify the laws.
Located just North of the PBID boundaries, Cohen Durrett, LLP attorneys practice primarily in the areas of employment law, commercial real estate, business entity formation and general corporate counsel, estate planning and commercial litigation. The firm also provides other legal services to businesses and individu-
al clients.

Lisa M. Nava, Supervisor Phil Serna’s Chief of Staff, has been unanimously elected to The Alliance Board of Directors. Nava, a graduate of San Diego State University, has served on various boards and commissions in Sacra-mento. Prior to joining Serna, she was District Director for Councilman Rob Fong. Before that, she was an associate for Downtown Resources (now Civi-tas) Property and Business Improvement District consultants, and worked
on the initial formation of The Power Inn Alliance PBID.
“With her extensive knowledge of how government works and her under-standing of PBIDs, we think Lisa will be an influential asset to our Board, said
Board Chairman Randy Sater.

Security Patrol and Alarm Response (SPAR) is available to all members within in
the Alliance boundaries. SPAR alleviates members from responding to activated
alarm calls and incurring costs for false alarm fees. Fees are paid for by the
Power Inn Alliance based upon your membership level.
The Alliance is partnering with Bayer Protective Services as the first-responder to
activated alarms. All members with installed and permitted (with the City of Sacra-
mento) alarm systems qualify for SPAR. When an alarm is activated, Bayer is notified
and will send a patrol to check doors, windows and visible perimeter. If a true emer-
gency is determined, Bayer will contact the property or business owner to decide
the next action.
According to Sac Police, 98% of all activated alarm calls are false. In 2012,
Police adopted Alarm Verification ordinance, which charges a fee for all false alarm
calls that utilize Police time. Fees can be up to $320.
Save time and money by joining SPAR http://www.PowerInn.org/SPAR.asp
