The plySHACK is to be constructed with sustainably forested 3/4” plywood frame and base and sheathed in a recycled cotton fabric treated with otter wax for natural waterproofing. The frame and base is an assembly of a series of interlocking and joint locked pieces fabricated using a CNC router. This will minimize waste and cost, allowing for precise specifications and quick production. The plySHACK is designed to be assembled by as few as two people in about 2 hours using only a mallet, utilizing interlocking dry joints to ease construction and deconstructed for reuse. Floor dimensions are 10’x7’10” with ceiling sloping from 5’ to 4’.

Room, Garden and Gallery:Live/Work space for a Bibliophile and Art CollectorARC 503, Spring 2013Roger Clark, FAIA

A bibliophiles perception of the world is shaped by the books they read. Books are the lenses through which they veiw the world. The Room and Garden is the built manifestation of this relationship. The North facade consists of a large window wall, and an extended reading nook on the second level with views of the distant city. A wall of bookshelves is inset into the Room and Garden’s concrete spine that extends up the slope of the hill, framing the garden space, and coming to an end at the base of a large oak tree where it turns down to form a plinth for a reading bench. The old oak tree, the sites dominant feature, shades the reader and the house from direct southern light while symboli-cally alluding to the clients pursuit of knowledge through reading. The Room’s roof plane turns up to allow full views of the tree from the interior.

The gallery, a later addition, is designed to house the client’s inhereted collection of works by the brithish Op-Artist artisit, Bridget Riley. In addtion to displaying artworks, the gallery serves to inspire and educate the client and visitors. Bridget Riley’s early works were inspired by the abstraction of light and shadow she observed while gazing into the canopies of trees outside her studio. The gallery space is designed so that the cleint’s office and the courtyard are located underneath the oak tree, hopfully providing similar creative inspiration. The gallery’s form was the result of the client’s desire to have views of the city and the art collection from the office. The central gallery looks out onto a courtyard featuring a shallow reflection pool. Lightreflecting off the surface of moving water also inspired Riley’s works.

Kidzu is designed to be a learning tool for children of the region with an emphasis on sustainability, hands-on learning and play, and cultivating strong connections to local culture and communities. Initial design studies focused on resolving the complex programatic require-ments in concert with the limitations of building atop an existing parking garage.

The museums steel structural matrix and inset programtic boxes were inspired by the

elements of a treehouse. The steel beams, columns and girders act like the branches of the tree, lifting the programatic elements off of the deck, and allowing for a multi-story structure. The program spaces, like play blocks, are slid, stacked and suspended from the steel matrix. A sky walk over Rosemary Street, indoor and outdoor classrooms and climbing walls, light scoops, and operbale openings blur the line between interior and exterior spaces; combining to create and idle learing enviroment.

The project began with an indepth exploration of Siza’s architecture, the goal being to design an orgianl reinterpritation of his Seaside Pools. Located adjacent to Siza’s iconic Seaside Swimming Pools the embedded Visitor Center runs parrallel to the protective seawall. The entrance angles back towards the city and an observation deck and bridge reach

out towards the craggy shoreline. Vistors enter along the main street walking beneath the lifted lobby roof, then ramp down along the seawall to the museum gallery and outdoor gathering space, eventually bridging out to an elevated observation deck with full views of Siza’s Seaside Swimming Pools.

The Performing Arts Center and Academy are designed to be visible and unique, while respectfully responding to existing site conditions. The theater and mechanical spaces are embedded in the hillside, and as the building emerges it takes on the character of the surrounding woods. Blending into the wooded landscape the louvered clad, heavey timber structure reaches out, presenting the blackbox to the art park. Muted during the day time, at night the lantern like surface of the blackbox becomes energized by the glow of lights and the shadows of the performance inside reflecting out onto the surround treeline.

The Academy is located at the edge of the wooded park along a primary circulation path. The large windows, exterior circulation paths, and louvered canopy give students and instructors the sense they are performing in nature while also showcasing to the public the processes of creating performing arts.

The design for the plySHACK was inspired by the hiking shelters built along the Appalachian trails and the sail and hull designs of sailboats along the North Carolina coast. Due to the limited budget and timeline the design incorporated sustainably harvested plywood sheets that could be fabricated on a CNC router and assembled by 2 people using nothing more than the friction of the wood and a mallet. This required the development and testing of different joints and assemblies, while refining the overall design, and finishing construction documents.

Following the competition a website was developed to offer the CAD files for the plySHACK to the public free of charge. Going forward we hope the website will expand to offer plans for other sustainably designed projects including furniture and other temporary structures.

NCSU Design/Build, Summer 2013,Ellen Cassilly, AIARandall LanouErik Van Mehlman, AIAScott Methany The 576 sqft Floating Classroom + Lab provides students a hands-on learning experience where

they can engage local ecosystems, ecology, biology and enjoy everything the HUB Farm has to offer. In addition, the float lad and classroom serve as a gathering space for concerts and other community events.

The butterfly roof design was inspired by the dragon flies that filled the air above the pond the day of our first site visit. The roof system is supported from rods attached to a central steel structure that houses a learning wall. Within the learning wall is a blackboard and storage units that double as seating. The steel frame rests on wood and steel flitch plate girders that span the length of the float and provide supporting the floor and float systems.
