OUR VISION is to be the leading multi-media company in regional Australia... We will do this through the recruitment and retention of quality people to serve and grow our regional and digital communities“
”
THE Port Stephens Examiner was established in 1893.
It is a free delivered community newspaper that is the informa-tion source throughout all of Port Stephens.
Our distribution is approximately 28,500.
We have gained our readers’ trust, respect and loyalty as we deliver hard hitting local news stories, general interest news, local sport, community happen-ings and so much more.
We pride ourselves on locally valued &
quality contentThe Port Stephens Examiner is part of the Newcastle News-papers stable of publications within the Hunter Region.
These papers include the New-castle Herald, the Star, the Lakes Mail and the Myall Coast Nota.
We are owned by Fairfax Media.
Our company mission is to be the leading multi-platform media company in Australasia.
In order for us to do this, it starts at the local community level.
Local serviceLocal solutions
Local relationshipsOur vision, is that we will do this through the recruitment and retention of quality people to serve and grow our regional and digital communities.
Our staff is made up of 18 local guys and girls who are passion-ate about the area in which we live and work.
There are two Examiner offices, one located at Nelson Bay serv-ing the Tomaree community and tourism driven market.
The other office is 45km away located at Raymond Terrace, serving the central and west communities. The local Coun-cil and Police headquarters is located at Raymond Terrace.
Our business is much more than a ‘newspaper’ these days.
Whilst we have a very strong newspaper publication, we also have rapid growth and com-munity following with our online news and information.
PortStephensExaminer.com.au has been steadily growing in popularity within our area.
We are more than a newspaper
We have now dedicated more time, money and resources (than ever) in publishing our online content.
We can offer the local business community unchallenged and incomparible marketing solu-tions, whether it be for specific targeted marketing or for a busi-ness seeking total saturation of the market.
Our advertising and editorial staff look forward to meeting with you.
Kind Regards.

Standard termsFairfax Regional Media reserves the right to refuse to publish material at anytime if we consider it to be unauthorised, misleading, offensive, de-famatory, illegal or detrimental to the standing presence in the community. We will try to contact you before doing so. We may also withhold, sus-pend, restrict or terminate any advertising service at anytime if you are unauthorised or we consider you to be a credit risk. Advertising should not mislead consumers into visiting a site that is unrelated to the content of the original material. Audio can only be used if it is user initiated by a click. Ads should not contain strong strobing effects or rapid image sequences. Ad must not disable form fields or other site functionality. Ads must not disable browser back buttons. Click through must open a new browser window. Image resolution 72dpi. Flash files must implement the click tag code as specified in Flash specs. Click though URL must be supplied separately in your email. If using Flash the URL cannot be embedded.
Flash creative specsHighest recommended frame rate is 18-21fps. Version 10 or earlier versions are accepted. Flash ActionScript2 is preferred, AS3 is accepted. Adobe files must be saved as CS4 or earlier versions. FLA, PSD or AI files supplied for creative production by Fairfax’s Digital Innovation Services, all layers / movie clips etc must be named. Any hidden layers will be discarded if not specified as an ‘alternative state’ such as a rollover. Note that CPU load limitations apply at all Flash creative. Below is an overview of frequently encountered problems due to Flash related, unreasonably high CPU load. Creative assets posing unreasonable load on the end user’s computer will be rejected. In contrast to the file size, the complexity of drawings, gradients, slow moving animation and detailed moving ele-ments may affect the number of calculations the CPU must action on each frame. Such load may be caused by some of the following reasons: 1) Translucent animated sequences animate on top of important graphics (eg jpg, pgn). 2) ActionScript generated events set to randomly generate fog, rain etc. 3) Imported graphics set to scale up over an extended period of time. You must always backup with a ‘non Flash’ whenever submitting a Flash file.

print inserted material
YOUR brochures and cata-logues cost your business a lot of money to print... don’t let them go to waste by them being con-sidered “JUNK MAIL”
Whether a house displays a ‘NO JUNK MAIL’ sign or not, people generally consider the wad of collated advertising material, (tightly rolled together by an elastic band) to be ‘junk mail’.
Question: What happens to your flyer when it rains?
Answer: If it’s inserted into the pa-per, it’s dry, because the Examiner is bagged in wet weather. If it’s just ‘mailboxed’ or thrown, then it’s likely to be unreadable - soaked.
Insert your brochures, flyers or catalogues into our newspaper.
Doing so gives them credibil-ity and increases the effective-ness of your market saturation and penetration.
Readers perceive Inserts as an added bonus when placed inside newspapers, rather than ‘junk mail’ when it’s in their letterbox.
The local community newspaper is a trustworthy and reliable vehicle. Ensure that your mes-sage is seen by the as much of the community as possible.

Checking the retina
ADVANCES: Retinal photography can detect serious problems.
DIGITAL retinalphotography is the latesttechnological advancementin the world of optometrybeing made available tocustomers.
The technology producesa detailed photograph ofthe retina to look for signsof disease.
Any eye examinationscreens for abnormalitiesand this allows theoptometrist to take aclearer look at the retina, its blood supply and theoptic nerve.
The retina and opticnerve are situated at theback of the eye and connectit to the brain.
Diseases which can developin the eye include maculardegeneration and glaucoma, which can both lead toblindness and vision loss.
A subtle change orabnormality in the retinacan point to these diseasesand can also give clues todetect high blood pressure, diabetes and tumours.
About 75 per cent ofvision loss and blindness is
treatable or preventablewhich makes thisphotography an excellenttool in maintaining vision.
The process is painlessand quick and requires thepatient to look at a specificpoint ahead of them and alarge flash of light capturesthe image which isenhanced on theoptometrist’s computerscreen.

EXPANSION: A major redevelopment of the clubhouse was carried out in 2008.– Picture by Stephen Wark
ON AUSTRALIA Day in 1961 aman called Toby Mills first teedoff at what is now known asNelson Bay Golf Club.Fifty years later, on AustraliaDay this year, members re-enacted that first shot tocelebrate half a century ofachievements. Now, the club ishosting a week of activities as anofficial celebration and reflectionon just how far it has come. The course began as a vision ofthe then proprietor of the ShoalBay Country Club Len Randall.Looking for something tocomplement his establishment asa tourist attraction, Mr Randall, along with businessmenBenjamin Norburn and JohnCarroll secured the lease of fiveacres of crown land on DowlingStreet for use as a golf course.Between April and August in1960 the land was cleared toestablish nine fairways andgreens as well as to connectelectricity and water. The three businessmen formeda company and the name‘Tomaree Golf Links’ wasregistered in September 1960.Despite not yet having aclubhouse – just a fibro-clad shedwith two rooms and men’s andwomen’s pan toilets – theTomaree Golf Club was formed inJanuary 1961.By June that same year thecommittee had bought out theshares in the company at a priceof $34,000, taking control of thecourse and its lease with the
Lands Department.A meeting in October 1962 sawthe Tomaree Golf Club’sformation cemented and aconstitution adopted.Mr Randall was later electedPatron, John Hancock asPresident and Albert Dunsheaand Reg Stickles were the VicePresidents. It was this group that set aboutbuilding the clubhouse which
opened in 1963.Between 1969 and 1971 landwas cleared to expand the courseto 18 holes and in 1972 the clubchanged its name to Nelson BayGolf Club Inc.Soon after the club becameknown across the Hunter for itsseafood days, Friday night rafflesand concerts.
In 1997 the committee thenbegan to work towards expanding
the course to 27 holes – it cost$750,000 – money that was putup by its members under adebentures loan scheme with aneight per cent return. The expansion opened uppossibilities for the club to hostevents such as the Angel BillyClassic and the Port StephensClassic.Known Australia wide as the‘bush course by the sea’, which
will forever be open to thepublic, the course has become amajor drawcard for tourism tothe Bay.Continuing its expansion, 2008saw a major redevelopment of theclubhouse to include a newrestaurant, smoking area, kitchen, disabled toilets, conference room and expandedpro-shop at a cost of close to $2million.

Club celebrating 50 years
MEMBERS: Brian Diemas, Max Pride, Elizabeth Pfennigwerth, Ross Lalor, Iain Woodhill, at Nelson Bay Golf Club.– Picture by Stephen Wark
Known as ‘bush course by the sea’KNOWN to many as the ‘bushcourse by the sea’ Nelson BayGolf Club has long served as amajor tourism drawcard to thearea while also playing a vitalrole in the community.
The course, which iscelebrating its 50th anniversarythis year, has not only managedto survive in a challengingeconomic climate as many othercourses have simply disappearedbut is now regarded as one of thebusiest courses in NSW and oneof the few that actually turns aprofit each year.
According to its generalmanager Jason Russell andpresident Max Pride, its successis largely due to its members’ andvarious committees’ foresight.
‘‘We’ve been lucky in the sensethat those guys who began it allwere forward thinking in creatinga clubhouse that allowed forexpansion and expanding to 18holes and then 27 holes,’’ he said.
‘‘You have to keep lookingforward to survive.’’
It is a sentiment that is sharedwith Mr Pride who said in his 10years as president, a priority hasalways been to create additionalsources of revenue for the club ina bid to keep golf itself affordable.
‘‘The [redevelopment] of theclubhouse was a majorachievement for us,’’ Mr Pridesaid.
‘‘It cost us about $2 million butit created another stream ofrevenue for us and in five years,
has pretty much doubled our bartrade’’.
While Mr Pride will retire as
president this year, Iain Woodhillis set to take over and willcontinue the club’s push towards
securing its future.‘‘We know the potential of what
we’ve got here,’’ Mr Woodhill said.
‘‘And as Max said, it’s aboutgenerating that revenue streamoutside of golf.’’
