Port Information: Beira
Beira hosts the second largest port in Mozambique, with a
total of 11 commercial berths stretching over 1 994 metres.
This includes a fishing berth mainly used by Pescamar
which was rehabilitated in 2018.
The port is located at the mouth of the Pungue River, 20km
from the open sea. Apart from serving the import and
export needs for the central region of Mozambique, its
prime location makes it a major transit gateway to
hinterland countries, including Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia
and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The port is linked by road and rail to Zimbabwe via Mutare
(319km) and by road to Malawi via Mwansa / Dzedza
(685km). The development around the coal fields in
Moatize also led to the rehabilitation of the Sena railway
line, connecting Beira Port to Moatize / Tete.
Cornelder de Mozambique (CdM) (a joint venture between
Cornelder Holding of Rotterdam (67%) and Caminhos de
Ferro de Mozambique (CFM) (33%)) manages Beira port
and has been swift to prepare itself for increased traffic by
dredging the access channel and port basin to a minimum
depth of 8 metres. An extensive two-year dredging
programme was completed in July 2011 by the Dutch
specialist dredging concern Van Oord. The continuous
build-up of mud in the area caused the port authority to
revise the channel chart datum back to 5.00m at the end of
2012, and a further emergency dredging operation was
completed by Van Oord in 2018.

Advising ETA: 14, 10, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 days, then 12 and 6 hours prior
to arrival.
ETA updates are to be sent to the Port Agents for further
distribution and instructions.
Airport: Beira boasts its own international airport, based 13.2km
from the port entrance. The following airlines fly in and
out of Beira on a regular basis:

Anchorages: Vessels are required to call Port Control for anchoring
instructions. A safe outer anchorage area is available
outside the Port of Beira.
Approaches: Vessels are required to make contact with Port Control on
VHF 12 / 16 1 hour prior to reaching 20 NM from Beira for
further instructions on anchorage / approach.
Ballast:Vessels are required to berth with minimum ballast to avoid
any delay to ballasting requirements. For the coal terminal,
vessels are required to confirm a minimum of 1 800 mtph
deballasting capabilities during nomination process.

Emergencies: For any emergency, vessels are required to make contact
with Port Control via VHF channel 12 or 16, and to inform
the agent immediately by mail or phone as possible.
Fresh Water: Fresh water can be delivered at all berths by pipeline.
Fresh water deliveries are also possible via road tankers in
case of any problems with pipeline availability.
Hazardous Cargo:Hazardous cargoes can be accepted upon prior request
and approval from the port. Hazardous cargoes are
required to leave the port immediately once discharged,
with a maximum of 24 hours allowance upon request.
Hours: The port operates 24/7, excluding 25 December and 1 January.
Pilotage: Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels moving into or out of the
port. Pilot exemption may be considered for vessels
stationed at Beira for an extended period.
Pilot Boarding Position:Between Papa Buoy and Buoy 6. Vessels to contacted Port
Control on Channel 12 or 16 for boarding instructions and
position.

Radio:

Ship Repair: Limited ship repair services are available at Beira, with a
dry dock available operated by Beiranave which is mainly
used for fishing and other small boats.
Storage:Various open storage options and undercover warehouses
are available at the port. Port storage is to be used as a
transit point and the port is not seen as an extended
storage facility. Port storage is complimented by various
private warehousing facilities within a 10km radius from
the port, specialised to serve the port storage facilities
and which may be used for extended storage periods.
Tide: Beira has usual spring low tides at ±0.5m, and spring high
at ±6.5m. Neap low tides are usually ±2.5m, while neap
high is around 4.5m.

Terminal Information: Multi-purpose Container Terminal
The container terminal covers 645 meters berth length.
Terminal design capacity is 400 000 TEUs per annum. The
terminal offers:
• 320 000m² well-illuminated container yard,
accommodating 8 000 TEUs painted slots and 6 000
TEUs unpainted slots
• 144 electrical reefer points
• 8 400m² secure bonded transit warehouse for
stuffing containers
Kindly note that IMDG dangerous cargo must leave the port
within 24 hours.
This terminal prefers the stripping and stuffing of
containers to be done outside of the port, but exceptions
may be made on a case-by-case basis.
Grain Terminal
In 2010, the new Beira Grain Terminal was inaugurated.
The initial US$10 million investment offered 30 000 tons of
silo capacity. The storage capacity was further expanded in
2017 to a current total capacity of 50 000mt. With vessel
discharging rates of 4 000 tons per day and loading facilities
for both truck and rail, the terminal aims to surpass peak
historical grain movements of 500 000 tons per annum.
Approximately 25% of grain traffic is set for domestic
consumption and 75% for the Malawian, Zambian and
Zimbabwean markets.

General Cargo Terminal
The General Cargo Terminal covers 670 meters berth length
with a design capacity of 2.3 million tons per annum. The
terminal offers:
• Five covered warehouses with a total of 15 000m²
• 12 000m² paved open space for granite, steel and other
break bulk cargoes
• 175 000m² storage extension area available
• Rail siding facilities at all warehouses
• Open bulk handling area mainly used for clinker, where
stockpiles are covered with tarpaulins to protect the
cargo against weather conditions
Edible Oil Terminal
Beira Bulk Services LDA runs the 22 000m3 storage facility made
up of 29 tanks ranging from 45 to 1 750 tons capacity (of which
23 are heated).
Most cargo transits from Beira to Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi
and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Coal Terminal
The Coal Terminal (TCC8) at the Port of Beira is located at Berth
8. The terminal is used for the export of coking coal as well as
thermal coal. By the second quarter of 2012, this rehabilitated
facility had been upgraded to handle up to 6 million tons per
annum. The results of this US$50-60 million investment
comprise of an upgraded stockpile area, a stockpile stacker, a
new conveyer belt system from stockpile to berth, two mobile
fingertip loaders and a refurbished quayside. The investment
was initially financed by Vale and Rio Tinto Benga Limitada,
with ICVL (International Coal Ventures Limited) and Jindal
being the current sole users of the terminal. The stockpile has
a maximum capacity of 280 000 tons.
Oil Terminal
Operated by CFM, the largest oil terminal in Mozambique
handled in excess of 1.5 million tons of fuels in 2016, including
gasoil, gasoline and Jet A1. Apart from imports for domestic
consumption, a dedicated pipeline pumps export petroleum
from the Port of Beira to Zimbabwe. The terminal is also an
important gateway to Malawi and Zambia.

Weather:
Beira features a tropical savannah climate. Average temperature is 28.5°C (83°F) in January and 21°C (70°F) in July, the
coldest month. The rainy season runs roughly from November to April.
