Origins of Pop Art
● In 1952, artists in London regularly came together to discuss mass culture’s place in fine art, the found object, and science and technology.
● Britain was still emerging from the post-war years during this time.
● However, the people of Britain were very curious with American popular culture.
● Things that were discussed among the people of Britain were Western movies, science fiction, comic books, billboards, automobile design, and rock and roll music.
Origins of Pop Art Cont.
● During the 1950s, certain artists in New York City began the the movement known as Neo-Dada.
● Pop Art began to emerge during the 1960s from the Neo-Dadaists.
What is Pop Art ?
● Art based on popular culture and the mass media.● It went along with the spread of pop music and the new youth
culture.● It characterized a sense of optimism during the post war consumer
boom of the 1950’s and 1960’s.● Its aim was to present a challenge to traditions of fine art by
including aspects of mass culture.● Another one of its goals was to blur and question the boundaries
between “high” art and “low” art.● Famous Pop Artists are Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James
Rosenquist, Claes Oldenburg, and Tom Wesselmann.
Characteristics of Pop Art
● Consisted of popular but ordinary objects that were transformed into art
● Bright and vibrant colors that stand out● Focusing on the contours, shapes, and
basics of a picture
