The latest Ofsted inspection rated theschool overall as ‘Good’ with someaspects being ‘Excellent’. In his letterto the pupils, the Inspector wrote:
“This is a good school and youare rightfully proud of it. It is helping you develop asyoung people exceptionallywell. You are clearly motivatedto learn and enjoy school agreat deal, because what you do is interesting andteachers make learning fun.”
Where are we?The school has been at its present sitesince 1st January 1958 when it openedits doors as a Junior School. At ourGolden Jubilee celebrations last year wewere very fortunate to have some of theoriginal teachers and pupils from 1958and they recounted how they hadcarried their tables and chairs from theold site, which is now MickleoverCommunity Centre, down Vicarage Roadto their new school.
What have we achieved this year? There is never a dull day in school life! Asa school we were pleased to receiveInvestors in People status, earlier this

By learning how to lead structuredtraining sessions and use a variety ofequipment, the youngsters are alsounwittingly setting themselves on theroad to a brighter future. This initiativeSam Godfrey intends to roll out to PrimarySchools in Derby, when he launches thejunior leaders award in January.
Sam explains, "Boxing is a lot more thantwo people getting in the ring andhitting each other," he says. "For a start, allmy classes for children are non-contactand are about getting fit, enjoyingyourself and learning new skills. If thestudent really gets into boxing andwants to go further down the line toactual sparring and competing itself, then great; but that's only a very smallpart of their journey."
Sam is convinced that boxing can helpyoungsters better themselves and givethem a positive focus in life - even ifthey have previously not been able toenjoy sport.
You can find more details of Sam's boxingschool at www.sggboxingclub.co.uk
Walter Evans,Darley AbbeyAt Walter Evans School, Darley Abbey,we are extremely proud of our schoolchoir!
The choir formed just a little over a yearago and continues to grow both innumbers and success.
We now have over 65 members, wedon’t hold auditions, we just involve ourvery talented children who love to sing!
We love to sing and move, with lotschoreography. Our children enjoysinging all kinds of music, from popmusic and musicals to more traditionalmusic. We are lucky to have some verygifted individuals and some representthe church choirs of St Matthews, DarleyAbbey, St Edmunds, Allestree and DerbyCathedral choir.
As well as regularly performing inschool, with our newly formed schoolorchestra, conducted by parent JennyMerriman, we have involved the choir inevents across the City. These eventshave included Massed choir at Derby
Cathedral, Darley Abbey WarRemembrance Day and the Arts Festival.
We have just achieved accreditation tothe children’s University of Derby, whereour members can now collect “points” toachieve bronze, silver and gold awards.
We couldn’t do it without the support ofour fantastic parents, who have formed, their own parent’s pop group to raisefunds for the school choir.
The first choir fund raising evening, which was a dinner dance organised byGinny Gandola-Gray (choir-parent)raised a much needed £300, which wehave invested in wonderful, colourful, jazzy uniforms. These uniforms are allbeing sewn by a team of parents, led byBev Scott Mullen.

active in 2010?
10
Derby City Council’s b-activeinitiative offers some useful tipsfor families to get active together.
To stay fit and healthy we need to havean active lifestyle. So just how muchactivity should we be doing? Therecommendations from the ChiefMedical Officer are: • that adults should take part in at least
three and ideally five sessions of 30minutes of moderate intensityphysical activity a week
• that children and young peopleshould do at least 60 minutes ofmoderate intensity activity a day
• that moderate intensity means you getwarm and sweaty – just how you feelwhen you are dashing about in a rush
• that you can break down the 30minutes into three 10-minute blocks, making it easier to fit into your daily life.
What is physical activity?Any form of exercise or movement isphysical activity. It could include walking, cycling, playing football, dancing, running, household jobs, gardening orwalking the dog.
One hour of exercise a day for childrendoes not have to be done all at once; itcan be built up throughout the day. Byencouraging children to be active it will…• help develop muscles and bones• reduce weight gain, which may lead
to diabetes, high cholesterol and highblood pressure
• help children feel good aboutthemselves, boosting their self esteemand help them feel less stressed
• improve sleep• stimulate the brain and learning.
Did you know that watching TVburns 70 calories an hour? Insteadyou could…• try dancing which can burn 310
calories an hour• skip which uses 680 calories an hour• cycle which can burn 410 calories an
hour.
Be active as a familyReplace time spent surfing the net, watching TV and playing computergames with more energetic activities. Here are a few family-fun ideas…• wrap up and head down to your local
park. Have fun on the playgrounds, playgames, go on a nature walk or cycle
• walk and cycle with the children, goon a family bike ride
• leave the car at home and walk toschool
• visit the countryside and naturalbeauty spots. Set a family challenge toread a map and explore
• dig the garden, encourage your childrento have their own vegetable plot
• chores game – everyone is given a jobto do around the house, timeeveryone, see who can do it thequickest
• have garden races, build a mini assaultcourse using skipping ropes, hoopsand balls
• practice skipping – do a familychallenge, who can complete themost number of skips in a minute?
• wash the car• clear some space put on some music
and dance• be prepared – have a box at home and
in the car with balls, a Frisbee or kiteand you will always be ready for action!
As a family start taking small steps toincrease activity in your lifestyle, smallchanges will encourage you to keepgoing.
You’ll reap the rewards by being active –it’s important for your health and wellbeing, but most of all you will have lotsof fun!

Our Floaties class is for babies from 0-6months and is set at a lovely relaxed paceto enable Mums & Dads to enjoy thisspecial time together in the water withtheir little one. We will teach you how tohandle your baby safely in the water, agreat way of increasing your confidence.
However, Puddle Ducks is not just aboutbaby swimming. We have a fantasticrange of classes for toddlers too, from thenervous absolute beginners to the veryconfident babies who have swum with usin our baby swimming classes. We buildyour child’s confidence in a fun, actionpacked class then we put those skills intopractice in our Dippers Class where theyreally learn to swim. We teach without theuse of armbands and by the time ourPuddle Ducks are three years old, manycan swim several metres on their own.

Cate Woodrow-Smith, a new PuddleDucks franchisee, is delighted to tell youall about some new baby swimmingclasses she has recently launched in andaround Derbyshire.
At Puddle Ducks, we believe thatswimming with your baby or youngchild is an extremely positive andrewarding activity that can even beenjoyed when your baby is as young asjust a few weeks old. Coming to aPuddle Ducks class, you can bereassured that you are being taught by ahighly qualified teacher who also hastraining in lifesaving and resuscitationskills for adults, children and babies.
We take babies underwater in PuddleDucks and they learn to kick and propelthemselves back up to the surface. It’s abeautiful moment to see your baby withtheir eyes wide open swimming towardsyou, waiting to be collected. Howeverthere is a serious element to this activity -perhaps it would gain you a few vitalseconds if your baby ever fell into a pool?
Cate says, “I believe those first fewmonths with your baby are so precious, and no other activity has as manybenefits. I took my daughter Oliviaswimming from just 6 weeks and ourswimming classes were always thehighlight of our week. Serves 4-6. You Will Need…• 1 medium red onion, finely diced• 2 -3 cloves garlic, crushed• 150ml dry white wine• 8 good quality sausages• 75g butter • Sprig rosemary• 2 pinch ground Nutmeg • 90g Freshly grated parmesan • Salt and pepper• Pinch of ground cloves• Penne pasta• 1 garlic clove
What to do…Firstly, bring a pan of cold water to the boil. Add a pinch of salt, and then pour in the rice, and boil for 10 – 12 minutes until therice is tender. Whilst this is cooking, trim and slice the springonions, and finely chop the pepper into small cubes. Heat 2 tbsp of olive oil in a frying pan, and add the mincedsteak. Sprinkle with 1 – 2 teaspoons of Cajun spice, dependingon taste (do remember you can keep adding more, but youcan’t take it back out!) Keeping the heat low to avoid burningthe meat, push it around the pan with a spatula or heatproofspoon to stop it from sticking, and clumping together. After 2 – 3 minutes, add half a teaspoon of Season all spice, adash of Worcester sauce and season well with rock salt and
ground black pepper. Throw in the spring onions and greenpepper, and continue to stir at regular intervals to prevent anysticking (you can add a little more oil if necessary, but the juicesfrom the meat should be enough to avoid this). Finely chop 6 –7 stems of coriander leaves and scatter in the frying pan.
Once the rice is cooked through (and remember, rice shouldbe soft, but still firm to the bite) rinse thoroughly with boilingwater from a kettle to prevent it from going cold, and thenreturn it to the saucepan.
Check the minced steak for taste, add more spices if necessary, and ensure the green pepper is cooked through beforetransferring to the saucepan with the rice. Stir thoroughly toensure the meat is distributed throughout, and add a sprinklingof Cajun spice at this stage if you want to hot it up further.
For the truly brave amongst you, add a few drops of Tabascosauce, sprinkle with any remaining chopped coriander, andserve.
