Dress Code Updates
As we continue to strive to get our
students into compliant standardized dress
attire. Below are a few reminders that may be
helpful for you and your child as they get
dressed in the morning.
*Sneakers must be of dress code compliant
colors of Black, Brown, Tan, Gray (not silver),
Blue, or White and may have one minor accent
color (e.g., piping or stripe(s) on shoe that is of
an other-than-compliant color). The entire shoe
cannot be striped. Shoe laces must be of the
same solid dress code compliant predominate
color as the sneakers or White.
*Shoes, boots, sandals (must be with a back
strap), or clogs (must be with a back strap) are
permitted and must be Solid-color Black, Brown,
Tan, Gray, Navy Blue, or White. Shoelaces must
match, be the same solid dress code compliant
color as this footwear, and must be tied.
*Students are permitted to wear boots that are
dress code compliant. However, garments are not
permitted to be tucked into the boot.
*Hair bands, hair elastics, and all other hair
accessories must match any of the approved
clothing colors.
*Skirts, skorts, jumpers, and shorts must be

concerns, please contact Ms. Rudawski, Dean of
Students, at extension 6001.

Library News
Do you enjoy children and
books? Would you like to spend time
with 25,000 books and countless
children? If this sounds fun to you, the library
could use your help. We need volunteers to help
with circulation, shelving books, processing new
books, and working on special projects. We offer
on-the-job training and the benefit of unlimited
checkout of books. If you have two or more
hours per week to spend with us, please call
(570) 402-1000, ext. 8001.
PTO News
The next PTO meeting will
be held on Monday, October 28th, at
2:30 PM in the PTO room. Don’t
forget if you signed up for the Bear Walk, we’ll
see you at the PV High School’s track on Friday,
October 11th from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.
Free & Reduced Breakfast & Lunch Program
We have applications for those students
who qualify for free/reduced lunches (based on
degree of need). Applications were sent home in
the beginning the school year; however, if you
did not receive one, please let us know. We want
to make sure everyone who is eligible has an
opportunity to participate in our free and
reduced breakfast and lunch program.
Student Arrival
Our expectation is that students be in
their classroom prior to 9:02 AM. All Polk buses
are scheduled to arrive by 8:52 am, and students
arriving after this time are rushed and miss key
parts of the morning routine. Please have
students arrive in a timely fashion. Arrival after
instruction begins (9:02 AM) is considered tardy.
Student Drop-off Procedures
Students and families are not permitted
in the building prior to 8:52 AM unless they have
a previously scheduled appointment. Buses will be
dropping off students at the front of the
building beginning at 8:52 AM. The driveway
directly in front of the school is off-limits to
cars from 8:30 AM – 9:00 AM. Please do not
drop them off and watch them from your car. To
ensure the safety of our students and staff,
please maintain a safe speed at all times when
dropping your children off in the parking lot.
Weather Related Cancellations
Early Dismissal - All after-school events
and activities will be canceled.
No School – All school-related events
and activities will be canceled.
PPL Electric Utilities will provide Take Action at Home community forums on October 17th from 6:00-7:00 PM (during the Family Night) focusing on energy saving behaviors, technologies, and how to save money on utility bills. Each household that attends will receive a free “Take Action at Home Kit,” which includes energy efficient technologies. In addition, PVI can earn an educational grant, based on participation, by hosting the forum.
K-3 Schedule for One-Hour Delay
Classes will begin one hour later with no
disruption to the day.
Specials will begin at 10:24 (Beginning of
period 3). Lunch and the Kindergarten day
will otherwise go as normal.
Breakfast is served when school is delayed.
K-3 Schedule for Two-Hour Delay
Classes will begin two hours later.
Breakfast is NOT served when school is
delayed.
Specials begin at 11:38
Kindergarten will follow the modified
schedule as described below.
Modified Kindergarten Schedule
Our school district always defers to the
safety of our school children when making
decisions as to holding classes on days when the
weather turns nasty. Often times a “delay” in our
start time will allow for roads to be cleared and
for better visibility for our drivers. However,
the impact of a two-hour delay costs us the loss
of many of our AM sessions and requires us to
“balance” attendance at the end of the year.
To address this, we provide a Modified
Kindergarten schedule that will yield shorter
sessions, but allow for no loss of the AM classes.
In the event the school district implements a
two-hour delay, we will operate under the
following time schedule. Please note this
schedule and post it in a prominent place in your
home.
Kindergarten Two-hour Delay
AM pickup time is two hours beyond normal time.
AM buses arrive ~ 10:52 AM
AM classes begin ~11:02 AM
AM dismissal ~ 1:15 PM (one hour later
than normal)
PM pickup time is one hour beyond normal time.
PM buses arrive ~ 1:15 PM
PM classes begin ~ 1:25 PM
PM dismissal ~ 3:37 PM
Classroom teachers will communicate to
you as to what the expectations are those days
(snack, modified instructional components,
rescheduling special events, etc.). Please
understand that your decision to have your child
attend on “modified schedule days” will be at
your discretion, based on the conditions of the
roads in your area.
Early Dismissal Procedures Due to Inclement
Weather
In the event of an early dismissal, AM
Kindergarten students will be held at the school
and dismissed with the students in grades 1-3.
There will be NO PM Kindergarten. Students in
grades 1-3 will be sent home on the bus they
normally take home from school. Morning
Kindergarten students will be sent home on
the same bus they come to school on.
Depending on the time of the dismissal,
lunch may be served to students. AM
Kindergarten students will be provided with some
form of extra snack or lunch on these days.
Every attempt will be made by the school to
contact parents of AM Kindergarten students in
the event of an early dismissal. PM Kindergarten
parents and ALL parents are encouraged to
listen to the radio or watch the major television
stations on inclement days.
There are times that, as a result of
inclement weather or a failure in the power
and/or heating systems of the schools, or for
other emergency safety concerns, it is necessary
to close the schools of the school district either
before the school day has begun or during the
school day. If there is a need to enact a closing,
announcements will be made immediately through
the appropriate media, and a Connect-Ed
automated phone message will be generated.
Students and their parent(s)/guardian(s) can
also tune in to local radio or TV stations for this
information. Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of
Kindergarten students should also pay particular
attention to possible delays in bus pickups, late
arrivals home, or early dismissals and are
responsible to listen to public announcements
regarding weather emergencies. Please refrain
from contacting the school office or central
administration to obtain information regarding
school closures or early dismissals.
Also, parent(s)/guardian(s) are respon-
sible to develop a plan for dealing with instances
where children will be dismissed early from
school and to inform their children about what to
do or where to go in the case of an early
dismissal. This should be done early in the school
year so that all children are properly prepared
for early dismissal at any time.

Information on any upcoming early dismissals
There are times that, as a result of
inclement weather or a failure in the power
and/or heating systems of the schools, or for
other emergency safety concerns, it is necessary
to close the schools of the school district either
before the school day has begun or during the
school day. If there is a need to enact a closing,
announcements will be made immediately through
the appropriate media and a Connect-Ed
automated phone message will be generated.
Students and their parent(s)/guardian(s) can
also tune in to local radio or TV stations for this
information. Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of Kinder-
garten students should also pay particular
attention to possible delays in bus pickups, late
arrivals home, or early dismissals and are

Nurse’s Corner
Calling all Emergency Sheets…
The emergency sheet
provides the nursing staff with
important information that assists us in caring
for your child. Please remember to complete
both sides of the sheet with all the requested
information (telephone numbers, cell phone
numbers, addresses, health concerns, email
address, etc.) to the best of your ability. Sign
the bottom of the front sheet, as well as the
back sheet under physical/dental examinations if
these exams pertain to your child. Also,
remember to send in any changes, telephone
numbers – home, cell, and work - as well as new
addresses and any health updates to the nursing
office as the school year progresses. If your
child has received any new immunizations, attach
a copy to the emergency sheet. Thank you for
your cooperation in school health.
Medication Reminder!
The administration of all medications,
prescription and nonprescription, during school
hours must be accompanied by a written
authorization signed by the doctor and the
parent/guardian. An adult must bring the written
authorization and the medication (in a properly
labeled container) to the nurses’ office. No
medication should be sent to school with your
child. Parents must bring all medication and give
the medication to the school nurse. The
medication policy can be found at
www.pvbears.org, School Board Policy No. 210,
and a medication form can be obtained from the
school nurse or print form 210-AR. Students may
carry and self-administer emergency medications
during school hours with written authorization
from the physician specifically stating that the
student may carry the medication and is
competent to self-administer the medication.
Immunization Requirements
If your child has received any
immunizations, please remember to send an
updated copy of their immunization record from
the physician to the school nurse. Students are
granted an eight-month provisional enrollment
when they lack the required Pennsylvania State
required immunizations. Students who do not
submit documentation from their physician that
they have received the required Pennsylvania
State required immunizations, will be excluded
from school after the eight-month provisional
enrollment period and will not be allowed to
attend school until the proper documentation is
received from the physician.
Fall Celebrations
Polk will be participating in a school-wide
fall celebration on Thursday, October 31st.
Students in Kindergarten through 3rd Grade will
have the opportunity to dress in costumes and
participate in organized classroom activities. We
will not be parading outside of the building. If
you prefer that you child not participate in these
activities, please send a note to your child’s
teacher by Friday, October 25th. Alternative
activities will be provided, thereby avoiding an
unexcused absence.
It is important that our parents help us
keep Halloween as a fall celebration that
recognizes the traditions of the season with
themes that are appropriate for an elementary
school. We are asking that parents adhere to the
following when sending costumes to school.
(Costumes should not be worn to school):
1. Costumes should reflect elementary
themes, cartoons, etc. and avoid any
violent or bloody themes.
2. We are still adhering to a policy that no
weapons be reflected with the costumes
(no type of swords, guns, knives, etc.)
3. Colored hair spraying is not permitted. 4. Children bringing costumes to school
must be able to dress themselves.
5. Clothing should reflect good taste and
not fall outside our dress code.
6. Please avoid using cosmetics or “makeup”
as it tends to wear, run and get on
objects and/or clothing.
Please be aware that students must wear
dress code compliant clothing to school.
Costumes should be brought to school to change
into for the classroom activities and students
will change back into their school dress before
departure from the building.
Thank you for your cooperation. We look
forward to a happy and safe Halloween.
We will be forwarding information home
to you about supporting our efforts in providing
more nutritional and healthy snack choices as
part of our Halloween celebrations.
Counselors’ Corner
Parents as Partners
We all
want to help our
children be successful
at school. During these
times of increased
mandates due to NCLB
and the pressure of high
stakes testing, the home-school partnership is
more important than ever. Parents and educators
must work together to gain a better
understanding of one another.
Parental involvement is a key element in a
child's success in school. To put it simply,
students who have involved parents do better in
school. Many educators love when parents
volunteer in the classroom, support children by
checking homework, and attend school events to
support their children. The involvement of
parents helps to build a stronger school
community.
The Home-School Partnership is About Balance
Some parents care so much about their
child's success that they can become too
involved in the day-to-day routine. When this
happens, the child is being set up for failure, not
success. The home-school connection needs to be
about balance. Children need to be allowed to
make their own mistakes, which often lead them
to learn valuable lessons. Mistakes help to build
resiliency and provide life lessons that will help
them in the future when they enter adulthood.
The following are some ways to help children
negotiate their way through school:
Allow your children to complete tasks
on their own. Some of these tasks might
include picking up their bedroom, helping
with dishes, and/or taking out the
garbage. It is also beneficial to allow
children to work out their problems
independently before jumping in to
provide support. If you find that they
are struggling even after putting forth
their best effort, it is a good time to
intervene.
Praise your children when they demonstrate
responsibility. Statistic: For every ONE positive
comment, a child hears TEN negative. Children
can never hear that you love them enough. Let
them know it every day.
Take advantage of teachable moments.
When a child neglects a responsibility, it
is a perfect time to teach them about
making mistakes and accepting
responsibility. Help your child develop
coping skills so that they can manage
their emotions appropriately when they
encounter a problem – a necessary skill to
navigating life.
You are the role model. No one makes a
larger impact on their children than their
parents. Spend some quality time with
your children because that is what they
really want from you. Recognize that
there will be times when your child will
be frustrated by a difficult task. Resist
the temptation to solve the problem
yourself. Problem-solving skills are a
necessary skill for life. Your child will
learn and grow from this experience and
will emerge with confidence to face the
next challenge.
Better Understanding
During these times of financial stress, defeated
school budgets and major budget cuts, this is an
important time for educators and parents to get
a better understanding of one another. Both
groups share a common goal, which is to educate
children, but there are times when educators
and parents have different ideas on how that
goal can be accomplished.
Communication is the most important element in
creating a positive school culture between
parents and educators.A successful school
community includes students, staff, teachers,
and parents. All of those stakeholders have the
opportunity to form important bonds that can
last a lifetime. Just like any relationship, the one
between home and school takes time,
commitment, and trust. However, the benefits of
a strong relationship between school and home
can outweigh the work it takes to get there.
