POLITICAL CARTOONS

WHAT ARE POLITICAL CARTOONS?

• Political (sometimes called editorial) cartoons are primarily expressions of opinion

• the illustrator draws about what they think

• Usually evoke (cause) an emotional response to whoever is looking at the cartoon

• Smile, Laughter• Anger

• Its main point usually can be summed up in a few sentences

• The best cartoons present an opinion and suggest the reason for that opinion

• In other words, a political cartoon is more similar to an argument than a slogan

• The argument is often portrayed in one of several ways

• One such way is the manner in which specific features are exaggerated• Another way is the manner in which the people are caricatured with the

objects selected as symbols
