Improving biofuel sustainability

• World is trending toward sustainability

• Producing the most sustainable biofuels will position us for the future

• It will make our plants more efficient

• It’s the right thing to do

This Involves all of POET

Ingreenuity Goals

Four Goals

• Reduction in water intensity

• Reduction in GHG intensity

• Increase sustainable biofuel production to replace petroleum

• Increase the production of bioproducts to replace products made from petroleum

First Goal: Water Reduction

Building on past gains

One Billion Gallons by 2014

Water Reduction Goal

• Reduce water intensity at our existing plants by 22% by 2014

• Target: 2.33 gallons of water per gallon of ethanol produced

• Represents an annual savings of one billion gallons of water

How do we get there?

• POET engineers have designed a proprietary process called Total Water Recovery

• Recycles more water, virtually eliminating discharge

• Facilities where we have installed it average 2-2.5 gallons per gallon of ethanol

Total Water Recovery

• Already installed in:– Bingham Lake, Minn.– Caro, Mich.– Hudson, S.D.

• We will expand it to other facilities

• Looking at making it available producers outside of POET

• Over one-third of the world's population has no access to sanitation facilities.

• At any one time, half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from water-borne diseases.

• In developing countries, about 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions.

• 1 out of every 4 deaths under the age of 5 worldwide is due to a water-related disease.

Water Scarcity & Health Effects

•Time saved being used for increased–• Agricultural production–• Manufacture of goods–• Sale of services

•Money saved by–• Reduced cost of water–• Reduced cost of medical treatment

•Water availability for increased–• Livestock production–• Crop production–• Fruit and vegetable production–• Food and drink vending

Improved access to water & sanitation reduces poverty

Our Five Year Targets

• 30 new sealed, hand-dug wells

• 25 new borehole and pump wells

• 35 wells serviced to improve access, amount and purity of water available

• Church-wide training to establish health workers and water management committees in every project village

• More than 300,000 people with sustainable access to pure water
