Introduction
Inside this School Based Assessment (S.B.A) you will see the entrepreneur’s plans and
objectives for their prospective business Lia’s Bake Your Day Pastries. You will also find
information on the description of the business; location; how capital will be obtained; and
roles and functions of the entrepreneur. This project will help others who read it by allowing
them to know the necessary steps they should take, if they are interested in operating a
business of their own.

Profile One
Description of the Business
This type of business will be a pastry business. This is a sole trader organization and will be
named Lia’s Bake Your Day Pastries. L.B.Y.D.P business is targeting the local market and is
for both kids and adults of all ages. The mission is to produce high quality cakes for all
occasions, cost effectively; in an environment that is safe, clean and friendly for our
employees and community members. The integrity of this business is based on the principles
of the cakes produced, that they are satisfying to the consumers, conscientious employees,
and our commitments to innovative growth and development. Lia’s Bake Your Day Pastries
will bring services to the neighbouring schools in its vicinity, also we will be catering for
weddings, birthday parties, cocktails and anniversary specials. The type of industry this
business will be involved in is linkage industry, because L.B.Y.D.P will be connected with
Janet’s Wholesale Supermarket located in the neighbouring vicinity of Southfield where both
businesses depends on each other to obtain their goods. This business is owned and operated

Profile Two
Justification of Location
Lia’s Bake Your Day Pastries will be located in Lover’s Leap Saint Elizabeth neighbouring
the lighthouse. This location was chosen for three reasons:
For market pull for customers from a neighbouring Guest House and tourists
exploring the 1700 foot cliff overhanging the sea, and the area is always filled with
people from the adjoining communities.
Transport access, also this area was chosen because it is close to the shipping port,
‘Port Kaiser’, so this business can save money on transporting goods from a distance
to ship to other islands so it is cheaper for importing and exporting goods.
For linkage industries, there will be help in getting the raw materials from a nearby
business place in Southfield that sells goods by wholesale.

Profile ThreeSelection of Appropriate Labour
Lia’s Bake Your Day Pastries will have approximately 10 workers. There will be 2 skilled
workers, 6 semi-skilled workers and 2 unskilled workers.
The skilled workers are as follows:
There will be 1 ingredient mixer whose importance in a bakery is to be accurate in the
amount of ingredients used into the batter and for creating a new taste for each pastry
and also to create new and different kinds of cakes.
1 baker whose importance in a bakery is to ensure that the correct time is set in order
to prevent burning of the cakes and bake the cakes in different shapes and sizes to
catch the eyes of the consumers.
The semi-skilled workers includes:
The truck operators, the business has 2 trucks with 3 workers each, one driving and
the other two is to load and unload. The importance of the truck operators are that
they transport the product and distributes it out to the consumers.
The unskilled are the 2 janitors who clean the building. Their importance towards this bakery
is to ensure that the building is kept clean and sanitized inside out because it is a business that
enrols food handling.
Reason or choosing this labour force is because it is one of the most suitable for this kind of
business.

Profile FourSources of Fixed and Working Capital
The fixed capitals that will be involved in this business are: The building, the machinery
other equipment such as the commercial ovens, refrigerators etc. along with the company’s
trucks.
The building will be used to facilitate the machinery and the workers to produce the goods.
The machinery will be used in helping to create a finished product (cakes). And other
equipment will be used for storage.
The trucks will be used to transport or to make a delivery of the products from the bakery for
sale island wide. In order to create this business, the entrepreneur will be using her personal
savings of JMD$2.5million for starting.
Working capital is the capital of a business which is used in its day to day operations. For
E.g. money, sugar, flour, etc. Also, a soft loan will be borrowed in order to keep the business
financially stable and for the day to day operations of the business.

Profile FiveRole of the Entrepreneur
Lia’s Bake Your Day Pastries is owned by Regina Bell. The entrepreneur is commonly seen
as the business leader and innovator of ideas and the business processed.
Roles of this personnel includes:
To bear all risks and to supervise the operations of the business.
Organizes the factors of production to create the cakes and provide special services
for consumers.
Ensure that everything such as all the equipment and machinery are all in place for the
operation of the business each day.
Developing proposals for the future activities of the business.

Profile 6Type of Production
Lia’s Bake Your Day Pastries will be involved in the Secondary Production, where this
involves the conversion of the raw materials such as wheat extracted from the earth and
processed into flour and also sugarcane for example, reaped and converted into sugar for the
making of the cakes, where the sugar is the sweetener and the flour is a major part of the
batter.
L.B.Y.D.P will be involved in this type of production because the raw materials needed for
this business operation will be obtained from other Janet’s Wholesale Supermarket in
neighbouring vicinity of Southfield in order to create delicious cakes. Therefore this business
will be involved in Secondary Production.

Levels of Production
Lia’s Bake Your Day Pastries will be a part of the Domestic level of Production.
This is where the cakes produced, will be of great services in the community for special
parties and be sold to the neighbouring restaurants to satisfy domestic wants.
This bakery will be producing cakes locally, so therefore, L.B.Y.D.P will be at the domestic
level.

Profile Eight
Quality Control Measures
Lia’s Bake Your Day Pastries will produce desserts low on calories. Two most important
quality control measures will be adhered to are:
To bring in health specialists to check the machines to make sure they are properly
cleaned and in good working state for baking of cakes.
And also, a pastry test will be done, where a specialist tastes the cakes after it has
been through the production process to ensure consistency.

Use of Technology
The two types of technologies that will be used in this business are:
The commercial ovens that will be used to bake the cakes. These ovens operates faster
than the usual stove ovens. These ovens are operated by the skilled workers after the
batter is mixed where they will be placed in the oven in order to meet the desire of a
finished product.
Also, the electrical machine mixers used by the ingredient mixer to mix the batter in
order for it to be poured into a container to be put into the commercial ovens for
baking.

Profile TenLinkage
Lia’s Bake Your Day Pastries will be involved in the backward linkage. L.B.Y.D.P will be
using sugar and other raw materials needed for baking from Janet’s Wholesale Supermarket
into the bakery.
The benefit being gained from backward linkage is that by using the sugar for e.g. as a
sweetener for our cakes so that they will be rich in taste in order to satisfy the consumers.

Profile ElevenPotential Growth
Lia’s Bake Your Day Pastries, grows both internally and externally.
L.B.Y.D.P will grow internally by upgrading the business with new and improved
technological machines and will be able to afford more skilled and semi-skilled workers for
the operation of these newly equipped machines.
To expand externally, L.B.Y.D.P have small branches throughout the island in rural areas.
Also, will the business merge with a much larger and well known industry in which profits
are increasing and so are the customers.

Profile TwelveGovernment Regulations
Lia’s Bake Your Day Pastries will be legally licensed to operate and also this consists of
being passed by a legal Health Inspector. The Health Inspector has to check both the hygiene
of the environment and the employees.
This will have a huge impact on the business because in order to work with food, you need a
healthy environment in which to operate.
Also, the business will pay its taxes in order to contribute to the operating of the country.

Profile ThirteenEthical Issues
Ethical issues which relates to production in the business are transactions between the
organization and the environment that leads to pollution and the diminishing of natural
resources.
This will affect the business positively, it helps us to stay in line with how we deal with our
waste.
L.B.Y.D.P will be disposing of their waste in a proper many. There will be a waste collecting
truck assigned specially with the business to be collecting its wastes. This waste will be
transported to the Mud Lake Dumpsite located in ALPART Saint Elizabeth. The way in
which this disposal will be made will leave a positive effect on the persons living nearby the
bakery, especially those with health issues, they won’t have any sort of problems arising from
the waste from this bakery.
