PnP Bedside Communication Interface Options for Automated

Data Capture

PnP Goals

CURRENT: Meet interface requirements of CIS & open bedside framework.

Near FUTURE: Adopt a bedside medical device gateway to HL7 server.

LONG RANGE: Ultimately get universal device interface standard into device.

Universal PnP Device Interface

Finally, a STANDARD !

Why has MIB not worked ?

Vendor’s are proprietary by nature and have no mandate to change.

Medical devices have long life cycle & design phase (change is slow)

Early MIB adoption was prevented by full OSI overhead & lack of off-the-shelf device-link options

No Data Standard !

”…going back to data standards, if the machines can’t communicate then pity the poor human that has to then put it all together.” Paul Tang

Goals

CURRENT: Meet interface requirements of CIS & open bedside framework.

FUTURE: Adopt a single medical device gateway to HL7 server.

LONG RANGE: Ultimately get universal device interface standard.

Standardization

“Every dollar and every minute devoted to developing a communications interface is time and money not committed to a healthcare-related application... It is unfortunate that engineering talent must be focused on the development and maintenance of specialized equipment interfaces rather than on solving problems that result in undesirable risks and costs.” (Schrenker and Cooper, previously cited)
