Mall opens toempty town
A press release just before the opening ofthe Tubatse Crossing Regional ShoppingMall this week inter alia states that: “Besidesdeveloping a mall that offers a well-balancedcomprehensive shopping and leisureexperience, it was important to us that, fromits outset, Tubatse Crossing becomes a realasset for the local economy and, whereverpossible, it directly benefits residents ofBurgersfort and the Sekhukhune district in ameaningful way.”
Judging by what could only be describedas a disaster in Burgersfort on Thursdaymorning this week, not everybody agrees, and when Platinum Gazette went to pressyesterday morning, the town was eerily quiet, the new regional shopping mall was apleasure to shop in after it opened its doorsto customers at 08:00 as all the peopleusually in town was held up at theBothashoek crossing by taxis blocking theroad and at the Apiesdoorn bridge over theSpekboom River on the Ohrigstad road.
At 10:00 when the official openingfunction was supposed to start, some peoplewho were supposed to be there were stillstuck outside town and the mall high brasswas locked into talks with those people whoorganised the blockade.
Some of the reasons for the blockadeare that the organisers of the blockadeallege that too many people from outsideBurgersfort received employment at themall, that contracts around the upkeep of theshopping centre went to the businesses offamily members of corrupt politicians etc.
Platinum Gazette contacted thespokespeople of the development to react tothese allegations, which was still awaited atthe time of going to press. At the time ofgoing to press everybody was waiting for theofficial opening function to start, whilenegotiations around the blockade were stillunderway. Reports of shots fired at theblockades and injuries sustanied, could notbe verified before going to press.

What will the impact of the new mall be?
Mr Johannes Moropa and Ms Evika Mahlatji said:“People will on the long term go back into town to shop, but for now people will go to the Mall because theythink there are special stuff. Traffic will be worse thanever now that the Mall is opening”.
Ms. Tebogo Moshoana said: “Thereare a lot of people in Burgersfort. The people will split. Some will go tothe Mall and others will go to the oldshops. There will not be such bigcrowds in town any more. There willbe less traffic in town but thatcrossing at the Mall will be aproblem”.
Ms Helen Mohlala, Mr Lebo Makofane and Ms PetuniaMokgotho said: “Many people will go to the new Mall. They won’t go to the rest of town. People will be stuckin traffic, especially at the end of the month”.
Ms Emily Moshwane and Ms Audelia Moshwane said:“There will be too much traffic at the Mall and it will betoo crowded. We think people will only go to the newMall and not further into town to spend their money. Itwill be difficult for businesses further into town”.
Ms Aggie Mokgotho said: “ Peoplewill only spend their money at theMall and will not come into town. There will only be bad traffic at theMall and no longer in town”.
Links: Me. ElizeKleinhans sê:“Baie mensegaan nog na dieou winkels komwant die verkeerby die Mall gaan‘n totale gemorswees”.
Me. By haar isJean en Armand.
Mr Sepadi Swafo said: “We like thenew things. I would like to give themunicipality a big applause formaking shopping easier for us.People will now spend their moneyat the Mall and it will be difficult forthe other shops in town to survive. That is why some of them hasmoved to the Mall. The traffic will becongested in town but the slipwayto the Mall will ensure that the Malltraffic do not impact on the rest oftown”.
Mr Ronald Kobe said: “People willstill go to the old shops. That Mallwill be overcrowded. Most of usdon’t like these overcrowded shops.A Mall is also more expensive thanthe other shops. That Mall was notsupposed to open before they’vefinished constructing the roadbehind the Mall connecting to theOhrigstad road. This weekend trafficwill be a mess”.
Ms. Setty Mohlala said: “Manypeople will rather go to the Mall. They must make another road orbridge from Bothashoek andAlverton’s side to ease the traffic. There will be less customers intown. Only Supa Save will survivebecause the old people like them, but the rest will suffer”.
Right: Ms Mary Letoka said: “Therewill still be a big traffic disaster at thatMall/Steelpoort cross. Especially theclothing shops moved to the Mall. There will be less people and moneycoming into town”.
The Tubatse Crossing Regional Mall opened its doorsyesterday. This long anticipated Mall is bringing shopsto the area that had never been available before. It is also set to change the economic spending patternas well as the traffic dynamics in Burgersfort. Willservice and convenience ensure that shops in the towncentre survive the impact of the new Mall?We asked readers what they think the impact of thenew Mall will be on things like traffic, other shops in thearea and where the money will go.
