Objectives: S.W.B.A.T.

• Introduction of crustal movement

understand and state evidence that shows

crustal movement

• How does crustal movement affect human

lives

• Define a bench mark and what it tells us

Activities:

• Notes/discussion present and past crustal

movement

• Video natures fury

• Model construction – Weathering/Erosion

• Missing letters chap. 11

• notebook organize to be turned in by end

of week - work on any missing work

Plate Tectonics – chapters 10, 11, 12 Movements of the Crust & Crustal Features

Evidence the Crust moves today:

1. Earthquakes 150,000 each year

2. Volcanic eruptions

3. Bench marks that have changed elevation

• Benchmark – locations on earth that its elevation has been measured very accurately. (bridges, dams, airports)

4. Displace structures: (buildings. Roads, train tracks)

Evidence of past crustal motion:

1. Distorted layers of rock (sedimentary rocks

that are bent)

2. Sedimentary rocks in high elevations

(fossils out of place, seashells on top of Mts.

Today’s technology helps to tell very

small crustal movements

Example: LAGEOS – laser geodynamic

satellite bounces a beam off the earth and

records any changes in the movement of the

crust – also G.P.S. data helps prove crust movement
