THE NEWS

“What we are doing is offering premium products at non-premium prices,” Bezos says. Other tablet contenders “have not been competitive on price” and “have just sold a piece of hardware. We don’t think of the Kindle Fire as a tablet. We think of it as a service.”

Older, Less Affluent Consumers Favor Kindle Fire Over iPad

What kind of customers will the Kindle Fire attract when the Amazon tablet

goes on sale in mid-November? If a new online poll is accurate, the audience

for the $199 device will skew older and less affluent than that for the iPad.

People ages 45 and over slightly favor the Kindle Fire by a 51% to 49%

margin, while two-thirds of those under 45 prefer the Apple tablet, according

to opinion-based social community SodaHead.com. Looking at tablet

preference by income level revealed even wider demographic contrasts.

People making more than $100,000 annually, for instance, overwhelmingly

favor the iPad, at 94%.

For those in the income mid-range of $25,000 to $100,000 -- which

encompasses most of the adult U.S. population -- the results were closer, with

54% still wanting the iPad, but 46% ready to try the forthcoming Kindle Fire.

The Next iPhone Embodied in a Super-Thin PrototypeEveryone wants to know what the next iPhone will

look like, but the folks at Giga.de took it a step

further and created a prototype based on rumors

and credible hints — and it looks great.

Its teardrop design makes it only 6.86 mm thick at

the top and only 5.33 mm at the bottom, and it’s a

bit wider than iPhone 4 — 59.94 mm vs. 58.6 mm

— to accommodate for the bigger, 4-inch screen.

Also, the mechanical round button on the front of

the device has been changed to an oval-shaped

capacitive one.

No one can say whether the new iPhone will look

anything like this one — for all we know, it might

be just an improved version of the iPhone 4, but

it’s as good a guess as any, and we certainly

wouldn’t mind if Apple’s designers had taken the

device in a similar direction.

Check out the video below (in German, with

English subtitles) for a walk-through of the

prototype and the full gallery at Giga.de.

Mashable: Will Apple Cards Reshape the Greeting Card Industry?

Were you surprised by Apple's announcement of the new Cards app for iPhone? You shouldn't

be - it's a multi-billion dollar industry that has so far weathered the recession better than most.

According to the U.S. Greeting Card Association, Americans send 7 billion greeting cards

every year, with the average household buying 30 cards. Retail sales of greeting cards within

the States are estimated to be in excess of $7.5 billion.

The figures are no less impressive when you leave U.S. shores. The UK's Greeting Card

Association reports £1.386 billion was spent on "single" (as opposed to multipack) cards alone

in the last year. The UK card industry has also seen annual growth - a value increase of 3%

and a volume increase of 2.7% - in the face of tough retail conditions.

The potential for Apple to app-ify the card personalizing, buying and sending process seems

huge. Especially when you consider that around 80% of cards are currently bought by women.
