Located not too far from Phuket’s shoreline, TapaoNoi is a small island managed by the Hydrographic Department of the Royal Thai Navy. Whether it hides a treasure chest of eco tourism or other surprises, let us go and find out.

For this trip, the Third Naval Area Com-mand has so kindly provided our group transportation which we were greeted by Admiral SuchinRakchart, chief of the lighthouse, at the Customs Bureau Port. After 15 minutes, the boat slowly ap-proached its destination and we could see an impressive, white lighthouse standing atop a small hill.

After settling down, we studied the map and started on our adventurous journey, the first stop being the old Japanese military forte built during World War 2. We ventured on foot through the woods for a while before reaching this historic place. It was rundown as it had been built several decades ago but we could imagine the gruesome history that went on in the past.

Next, my friends and I trekked through to the other side of the forest in search of Phuket’s first Sino-Portuguese building. This one storey architecture is more than 150 years old but it is still in pristine condition.

Today, the building is used for historical exhibitions on hydrographic which visitors will find items like ancient lanterns, etc. There are also future plans to develop and expand it into a museum.

Next to the Sino-Portuguese building is the white lighthouse with attached ladders for climbing. The 360 degree view at the topboasts vistas of Phuket Island and the emerald sea which extends as far as the eyes can see under the topaz sky. Naturally, we didn’t miss the chance to capture TapaoNoi’s awesomeness on our cameras.

The sun was exceptionally bright today but we were shaded by thick, tall trees which grew along the way. We didn’t feel too tired because the birds were singing while cicadas chimed, and the wind blew its soft ocean breeze.

Soon, we spotted the stars of the island who came out of hiding to feast on ripe, sweet fruits. They had black bodies with white bellies and legs, the large, yellow horned beaks crying “Gag Gag” sounds; yes, they’re none other than the famed Hornbills.

Hornbills of this island are Thailand’s smallest species. They depend on a fertile forest environment to thrive in as they cannot build their own nests, but live in a burrow on tree trunks. We felt lucky to get a peek of this beautiful bird having a feast.

Baan Tha Dindaeng is located at Moo 4, Tambol Lamgan, Amphur Thai Muang, Phangnga Province. Rich with mangrove forest, much of the land area is seaside and protrudes out into the ocean, making it an interesting place to enjoy the beauty of the natural landscape.

We started exploring the thick mangrove forest on a kayak and let the current guide us down the meandering waterway. After a while, we came upon a large canal called “Ao Mun”.

Here, we changed our mode of transportation from the kayak to the larger “Hua Toeng” boat to further our journey to “Tha Kua”. From there, the boat passed the beautiful, golden savannah before heading to a beautiful beach beside a tranquil bay.

Standing before the so-called Giant-Faced Mountain, we were puzzled. Where is the monster face? Bang Deen (Habeedeen Waharaks), Chairman of Baan Tha Dindaeng’s Eco-Tourism Group, told us that originally, the side of the mountain facing the Similan Islands looked like an angry face of a giant.

It remained that way until World War 2 when several Japanese ships sailing across this spot kept sinking for no apparent reason. Certain Japanese soldiers believed that the frightening shape of the cliff-side brought bad omen and so they fired several cannon balls at it until the surface was completely destroyed and fell into the ocean below. And that became the legend of the Giant-Faced Mountain.

We took our time studying every beautiful detail of the scenery, from the top of the rock boulders down to the underside of the cliff. The bay area was so peaceful, the sand so powdery and the water clear and blue. The small fishes and crabs even came by to delight us with their presence.

From the legendary cliff-side, we carried on to a spot which, at one time, was a mining site. There is a 40-meter long double concrete track aged over 50 years used for tin mining purposes back in those days. Now that its golden era has past, the tracks became a monument of the glorious history which the people of Tha Dindaeng are very proud of.

Before the trip ended, Bang Deen brought us to see the village’s pesticide-free hydroponic vegetable garden. They grow all sorts of vegetables like kale, lettuce and bokchoi which brought in steady income to the village.

The kind host brought us fresh coconut juice while we were busy checking out the vegetable garden and even roasted cashew nuts for us to try. This certainly is one of the sweet qualities of the people of Baan Tha Dindaeng that made sure their visitors felt welcomed.

The road leading up to Nak Gerd Mountain is lined with thick trees and small, lovely cafes in various chic styles. Each of them offer panoramic views that lets visitors revel in the vast expanse while sipping cool drinks.

On the way, we passed by several adventurous ATV riders who were having a blast revving up and down the mountain. Some adorable elephants were also around to greet guests and sure enough, everyone just loved taking pictures and feeding them.

For those who’ve always wanted to try riding an elephant, here’s the perfect chance to do so. Each round takes only 15 to 30 minutes and riders will enjoy the lovely forest scenery along the way.

We finally reached the top of the mountain where Big Buddha is situated. Looking around, we could see people of all nationalities busily saying prayers, lighting incense sticks and offering flowers.

The Big Buddha was sculpted in the Manvichai position in contemporary style. The statue is 25.45 meters and 45 meters tall, covered in white Suriyagan Burmese marble that beautifully shimmers and sparkles in sunlight. The weight of the marble alone is a whopping 135 tons.

The vast area in front of the statue is a nice view point that showcases Phuket’s panoramic vistas. You could see all the way to Phuket town, Chalong Bay, Laem Promthep, Kaew Pisadan Island and even Kata and Karon Beaches.

On this sunny day, we are feeling adventurous and thought that it would be fun to leave our beloved Phuket for the day to visit Hong Island located within the neighboring Krabi province. The island is under the protection of Thanboke Koranee Marine National Park and takes just a little over an hour to reach by boat from Phuket.

All these wonderful things, though, are not the ultimate this destination has to offer. The real attraction lies on the other side of the island, which is a natural pool of water hidden behind tall limestone cliffs; hence the name Koh Hong which means ‘Room Island’. The view of this lagoon or inner sea is absolutely breath-taking like the ones you see on postcards.

My friends and I were running around like excited little children who have never seen a beach before, but I guess this is the effect it had on us. In the water, countless fish swim around healthy coral reefs, making it a treat for snorkelers.

After we were done taking pictures, each of us took time to relax by ourselves. Some went off kayaking, others had gone swimming, snorkeling or trekking along the nature trails.

Among the list of Phuket’s favorite local delicacies, you can be sure to find spare rib noodles. We went looking for a particular vendor who occupied a medium sized push cart down in Soi Soon U-thit and found people gathering around something. We crept closer and there it was, the famous Jee Peng Spare Rib Noodles.

คณปาไมหวงสตรอาหารจานเดดนดวยคะ บอกทกอยางไมมกกไวเลย มเพยงวตดบไมกอยางและกรรมวธการปรงกงายๆ เรมจาก นำาหมภเกตมาแชนำา ทงไวนาน 5 นาทพอใหเสนนม พอสะเดดนำาแลวนำาไปผดกบซอวขาวผสมซอวดำานดหนอย พอใหมสสวยนารบประทาน แลวเหยาะนำาตาลกบเกลอตามไปดวย ผดใหเขากน

The lady was generous about her recipe and even gave us her ingredients and cooking instruction. She said that first, you have to soak the Phuket noodles for 5 minutes until they become soft. After that, stir fry with some soy sauce and sweet sauce, then add a pinch of salt and sugar to taste.

Equally important is the clear soup flavored with two types of sugar cane and thatch grass roots. MSG is never used in Jee Peng’s spare rib soup because everything must be homemade. And instead of vinegar, palm sugar is used to give it a tangy taste which is milder and aromatic.

My friends threw me into the sea. It was not dangerous but being counted as one of the funniest time for my experience”, she told.“The three days of Songkran Festival passed so fast. We were not on the pick-up truck and soaked with water but all of us were enjoyed splashing the other people by our water guns, the smiling faces of all people around, their laughs, their style of dressing and the funny ways of splashing”.
