Photoshop

• Photoshop is a program used largely for the purpose of manipulating, altering or editing images.

Image Resolution

-The resolution of the image is important in Photoshop.

-The more pixels, the better the photo alterations will turn out.

File Type

• Be sure to be aware of the type of file you are using.

-TIFF-PSD-JPEG *may lower quality, will merge

layers*

JPEG = Joint Photographic Experts Group

File Compression

• LOSSLESS = nothing is thrown out when the file is being compressed (.PDS .PMG .TIFF)

• LOSSY= pixels are being thrown out and never replaced (.JPEG)

USING PHOTOSHOP

To OPEN a file…

CTRL + O

To SAVE a file…

CTRL + S

Don’t forget to pay attention to what file type you use when saving!

To VIEW a file…

ZOOM Z

CTRL + or

CTRL –or

ATL + wheel on mouse

HAND H

This tool is used to grab the image when it is zoomed in so you view different parts of it.

Just hold down the SPACE BAR and move your mouse around.

FULL SCREEN VIEW F

This function will allow you to view your image in different ways. Keep pressing F and see how many ways you can view

the image you are working on.

To MANIPULATE a file…

UNDO / REDO

• “CTRL + z” is to go back and forth from the last command you operated

• “OPT + CTRL + z” is to go back multiple steps.• “Shift + CTRL + z” is to go forward multiple

steps.

TOOLS

-In Photoshop, you will be using various tools in order to alter the image to your liking.

-The following tools are ones that you will likely be using most often.

-Each tool has a set of “sub tools” that are essentially the same thing, but more precise.

BRUSH B

*Be careful! Make sure you are in the ENGLISH KEYBOARD setting when using the brush tool*

To change the size of the brush (diameter):

Right click on the mouse

OR

“[“ for bigger and “]” for smaller

MOVE V

• This command is used when you want to move layers around (hold down CTRL)

• To move elements on a specific layer

• You can always RIGHT click for more move options.

ERASER E

• Works just like the BRUSH controls• [ and ] change the diameter of the eraser.

• Be careful which layer you are erasing on. You never want to erase on your background layer!
