BEST PHOTO ESSAY

Honourable Mention: SHARON THOMPSON & BRENDAN JOHNS, The Eastern Door

A photo essay should tell a story easily, using minimal words and letting the photographs do the talking. Some of the photo essays submitted were cluttered, with photos overlapping, or butting up against eachother, confusing the eye. A good photo layout usually features one or two dominant photos, supported by

accessory photos. Too many photos on the page can cause clutter, creating a confusing, messy layout.

MARK GAGNÉYour Local Journal

Mark Gagné's was the hands-down winner withhis photo essay on the funeral of firefighterJames Peter Ratcliffe. This was an excellent

example of good design married with great pho-tos. The piece stood out from the crowd for itssimplicity, and the emotions evoked by the pho-

tographs. Well done.

Judge: Barbara Dean-Simmons, The Packet, Newfoundland • Number of entries in the Best Photo Essay category: 11

David Anderson andStephane Champagne. There was no headlineon this photo essay so

I can only assume itwas a military training

exercise. Other thanperhaps adding a

headline or caption toexplain what the photo

spread was about, Ifelt this photo spreadwas well done. Goodclose ups and a good

page design, good mixof vertical and hori-

zontal photos as well.

PERRY BEATONThe Record

2ndPLACEThere were a few photo essay entries of

fires, but Perry Beaton's photos of the firethat destroyed a candle factory stood out becauseof his decision to get close up shots at the scene.

He also chose to vary the size of the photos on thepage, and allow white space between the photos,

making for a cleaner layout.
