Pentecost Sunday Part XVII:
“He was crucified under Pontius Pilate.”
If you are recalling the Passion narrative that involved Pilate condemning Jesus to death, you will
notice something about the character of Pilate: he didn’t want to put Jesus to death. This unfortunate
historical point has not been ignored by several people sympathetic to Pilate. Nevertheless history has
declared him the man responsible for Jesus’ death, and rightly so. He was the one who pronounced the
condemnation and allowed his death.
Herod Antipas, the son of Herod the Great, was the ruling official of the Judean province. Under his rule
was the prefect of Jerusalem named Pontius Pilate. As prefect he was responsible for keeping the peace,
maintaining Roman control of the province, adjudicating issues of law, and collecting taxes and tribute to
Rome. The title of prefect is rather prestigious. Thus we now can understand the story. Pilate sent Jesus
to Herod for a jurisdiction on this case. Herod claimed that this case was not one of Roman law but of
religious law therefore Pilate was responsible for adjudicating the case. Since no one was below Pilate in
rank order, he was required to make a verdict. But only one verdict was acceptable by the Jewish elders
unless he wanted an all out revolt by the Jews. Fearing the situation that could ensue, he condemned
Jesus to death as a way to keep the peace.
Crucifixion. We hear of crucifixion often, but do we know how it works? Usually the condemned
criminal, who is a slave, is beaten and then tasked with carrying the upper beam of the cross or pole. Once
at the site for the crucifixion, usually a roadway, the person is
either tied to the cross or nailed to it. The person is tied to
the cross in such as way that their lungs collapse from the
position of the arms causing difficulty when trying to breathe.
In order to breathe the per- son must push on their feet, which
are nailed to the bottom plank, and push up with their back
scraping the harsh wood and then get a breath of air. This process could continues for a few hours and up
to several days until the person either asphyxiates or dehydrates. Crucifixion is a cruel form of the death
sentence. Fr. Cody

PRAYER FOR A NEW BISHOP O great St. Helena, patroness of our diocese, who for love of Our Lord made pilgrimage to the Holy Land to mark the sites of His Pascal Mystery, grant, I pray, that you would intercede to the Father on behalf of our Diocesan Church as we await the appointment of our next bishop. Grant that we
will be sent a spiritual shepherd after the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for us, His sheep. Pray to God that we will be given a bishop who is faith-ful and just, holy and wise, loving and zealous. May he be com-pletely devoted to the Lord and to the service of the people en-trusted to his care, so that the Diocese of Helena may experi-ence a springtime of growth in holiness and the number of souls drawn to the Lord through His Church. Amen
