Pool Pump and Motor Energy Efficient Standards
Jan 1, 2006• Pump Motors must be Energy Efficient• Standard test methods for:
– Motors
– Pumps (including motor)
• Labeling – – Rated Hp pump
– Total Hp of the motor
Jan. 1, 2008• All pumps 1 Hp and greater must be multiple speed• Must have a controller for multi speed pumps

Amps do not Calculate Cost
• What is an Amp– A unit of measurement that tells how much electricity
(electrons) flows through a conductor.
• Watts (AC circuit) = Volts X Amps X Power Factor
• You can’t compare the IntelliFlo to a conventional pump with Amps. (Power Factors are EXTREMELY DIFFERENT)
The Difference Between kW & kWh
• kW (kilo-Watts)
– The “Rate” of energy consumption – A measure of power (equal to 1,000 watts)
– An instantaneous measure, for example, 60 mph or 30 gpm “right now”
– The IntelliFlo displays Input Power in Watts• kWh (kilo-Watt hours)
– The “Quantity” of energy consumed– The basic unit for pricing electricity…12¢ per kWh– Equivalent to one kilowatt (kW) of power used for one hour. – It equals 1,000 watt-hours and is the equivalent of 3,412 Btu’s of
energy.
Tier System in Electrical Bills
Tier Level Monthly ConsumptionkWh usage (% over baseline)
kWh Rate
Tier 1(Baseline)
0 – 460 kWh $ 0.12 / kWh
Tier 2 461 – 600 kWh (1% - 30 %) $ 0.14 / kWh
Tier 3 601 – 920 kWh (31% - 100 %) $ 0.23 / kWh
Tier 4 921 – 1380 kWh (101% - 200 %) $ 0.29 / kWh
Tier 5 1381 – 3000 kWh (>200 %) $ 0.34 / kWh
1.5 Hp @ 10 hours/day = 575 kWh / month
Pump Affinity Law
Speed (rpm) ≈ Flow (gpm)
Speed (rpm) ≈ Pressure2 (ft. of Head)
Speed (rpm) ≈ Power3 (kW)Example: Reduce speed
3000 rpm 1500 rpm (50%)
½ Speed (rpm) ≈ ½ gpm
½ Speed (rpm) ≈ ½ x ½ = ¼ Head
½ Speed (rpm) ≈ ½ x ½ x ½ = ⅛ kW
3000 rpm 1000 rpm (33%)
1/3 Speed (rpm) ≈ 1/3 x 1/3 x 1/3 = 1/27 kW
Pump Affinity Law
Flow as Speed Changes
Pressure as Speed Changes
Power as Speed Changes
Energy saved through speed reduction is MUCH GREATER than savings through improved motor efficiency
Flow vs. Power
Speed Flow Power
(rpm) (gpm) (W)
3450 66 2000
3000 55 1157
2400 44 593
1800 33 250
1200 22 74
600 11 9

A rebate program funded by PG&E to promote the installation of Pentair’s innovative new variable speed pool pump
- Consumer $100- Installer $400
Rebate eligible: IntelliFlo®, IntelliFlo® 4x160, IntelliPro® 4x160,
Requires Pentair/PG&E Certification
Consumer need not do anything except sign the invoice; your application will automatically initiate a $100 rebate sent directly to the consumer.
Applications must be submitted to Pentair from you the installer for the full eligibility of both rebates.
- Note: Just like previous programs, applications sent directly to PG&E will qualify for only the $100 consumer / $200 installer rebates.
To Qualify1. Attend training (Training Verification Form)2. Agree to program requirements (Letter of Agreement – LOA) Once verified, you’ll receive confirmation email--You are now a Certified Installer under the Pentair/PG&E Rebate Program –
To Claim Rebates1. Log-in to program website, www.advancedenergy.org/pge2. Download and print hard copy of Installation Report3. Identify Customer, install eligible pump, and complete an Installation Report on site4. Submit Installation Report via website (transfer info to online form)5. Fax a copy signed by customer & you to ATTN: Sadia Sadiq at (919) 832-26966. All installations subject to random inspections7. Rebate checks Issued:
