TRANSCRIPT

Digital Communication in the 21st Century

Ms. Katie MartinPDLM Workshop: CIED 7601

Cheering on your team…

A day at the park…

Out to dinner with friends…

Out on a romantic date…

Do you think that Albert Einstein’s statement has merit?

Pre-Workshop Survey Agree Strongly/Agree/Neutral/Disagree/Disagree Strongly

1. The Internet has made us less curious and inclusive.

2. Age restrictions should be placed on social media websites.

3. Communication through technology devices impacts the way we socialize today.

4. The advances in technology are moving too fast.

5. Technology is one of the fastest growing addictions in our society.

6. The Internet is the best invention ever.

Questions to Think About…

How is technology revolutionizing society and the means by which we communicate in the 21st century?

What are the most commonly used modes of communication?

What impact does communication play on the development of adolescents and in the social setting?

How can technology be effectively used to enhance a learning environment?

Pros vs. Cons of Technology Use

Technology Usage Scenarios

1. Sarah has a big anatomy test tomorrow. Her parents have been reminding her how important grades are this year as she starts looking at colleges. The NSYNC reunion tour is in town tonight and she receives a text that a friend has bailed to stay home and study. This is the chance of a lifetime…there will be more anatomy tests but this is the only NSYNC reunion tour. What does Sarah choose? What are the results of her decision? 2. Jim is a senior in high school and his car is in the shop. During math class, he takes his phone out of his pocket to text message his mother. His teacher sees the phone and collects it due to the school’s handbook and technology usage policy. Was the teacher justified in their action? What might Jim have done differently?  3. Adam is a new student in school and prefers to sit in the back of the classroom. Each student has a computer to use in class for note taking and research. Adam has found a website that allows him to play free games like pool, blackjack, and poker. Adam shows up to class for a quiz Wednesday without notes. When asked by the teacher, he states he did not know notes could be used on the quiz. All other students in the class are prepared and do well on the quiz; Adam can only guess on 2 out of 10 questions. How would you approach this situation and deal with Adam? Is it safe to assume he was off-task if he was the only one who didn’t hear the instructions? What steps would you take to ensure that Adam gets on track?

NPR Survey American Attitudes Towards Technology

92% of all Americans under age 60 say they have used a computer.

87% believe computers have made life better for Americans.

57% believe the government should help low-income people get access to computers.

78% believe the government should help low-income children receive access to the Internet.

Internet Fears: 85% possibility of dangerous strangers contacting kids; 84% availability of pornography; and 73%

information on how to build bombs.
