Losing Weight - Unhealthy

❖Anorexia Nervosa - an eating disorder where the individual reduces their calorie consumption to a dangerously low level

Characteristics of an anorexic:

❖ a. Have a distorted body image, feel fat even when we see them as a walking skeleton.

❖ b. Have a honest fear of gaining weight, equate gaining weight with losing control.

❖ C. Begin dieting, but they cannot stop.

Characteristics of an anorexic:

❖ d. Eating habits: may refuse to eat except in tiny portions, deny hunger, may binge and purge.

❖ e. Physical complications: become hyperactive, skin becomes dry and scaly, hair becomes dry and brittle, females may stop menstruating, may grow long, fine hair all over their body

❖ f. 20 % of anorexics will prematurely die due to complications related to the eating disorder

Warning Signs:

❖ a. Significant or extreme weight loss

❖ b. Reduced food intake (low calorie, fat free when they do eat)

❖ c. Ritualistic eating habits (cutting food extremely small)

❖ d. Excessive exercise.

Warning Signs:

❖ f. Say they are fat when they look too skinny.

❖ g. Has highly self-controlled behaviors.

❖ h. Does not reveal feelings.

❖Bulimia Nervosa- Characterized by a repeat binge and purge cycle.

Warning Signs

❖ a. Always have an excuse to use the restroom after meals.

❖ b. Mood swings

❖ c. Unusual Swelling around the jaw

❖ d. Frequently eats large amounts of high calorie food without gaining weight

Warning Signs

❖ e. May purchase and eat large quantities of food in the spur of the moment

❖ f. Laxative and/or diuretic wrappers found

❖ g. Unexplained disappearance of food from the house

Binge Eating

❖ Binge eating disorder is an illness that resembles bulimia. Like bulimia, the disorder is characterized by episodes of uncontrolled eating or bingeing. Binge eating disorder, however, differs from bulimia because people with this disorder do not purge the excess food after eating.

❖ Individuals with a binge eating disorder feel that they lose control of themselves when eating. They eat large quantities of food and do not stop until they are uncomfortably full.

❖ Usually, they have more difficulty losing weight and keeping it off than other people with serious weight problems. Most people with the disorder are overweight or obese and/or have a history of weight fluctuations, either in their own life or their family’s past.
