Community or Recreation Centres These buildings are where people gather in your community to enjoy recreation activities. As someone who lives in Burnaby, you and your family are able to use these buildings. Each of the centres offer different programs and services. Some include weight rooms and cardio equipment, some have swimming pools, some have skating rinks, some are dedicated to the arts, while others have special programs for young people or seniors. Drop by a centre near your home to find out more about the services they offer.
Swimming Pools & Skating Rinks Burnaby has four indoor and four outdoor swimming pools. It also has three ice skating rinks. Here you can learn to swim, exercise in the water, skate or play hockey. Swimming and skating are great exercise, and they are also a lot of fun.
Seniors’ Centres Burnaby has four seniors’ centres which offer many programs, activities and outings for people who are 55 years and older. Join us—make new friends, stay healthy and be part of your community.
Youth Centres Burnaby also has five youth centres which offer after-school and weekend activities for youth aged 10-18 years. Get your children to check out a youth centre in your area so they can make friends in their community and have fun.
Golf Burnaby has two 18-hole public golf courses and two pitch-and-putt golf courses. You can take lessons or just practise playing the game.
Shadbolt Centre for the Arts The beautiful Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is in Deer Lake Park. Here you can watch a play or concert, and take a class in theatre, music, pottery, dance or painting from experienced teachers.
Burnaby Art Gallery Learn about your new community through the artwork of its artists. The Burnaby Art Gallery is located in an elegant old house called Ceperley House. Look at the artwork and learn more about it through talks and workshops.
Burnaby Village Museum & Carousel Stroll down the streets of our 1920s village, exploring heritage and replica buildings. This outdoor museum shows how Burnaby looked in the early part of the 20th century. It includes shops and homes, a farm and a carousel for your children to ride on. Gate admission is free all summer long and during Heritage Christmas. Special event rates are applicable for Haunted Village.
Parks & Walking Trails Here in Burnaby, people love to walk in nature. The city has many parks and walking trails. Do you live in an apartment or a house without a backyard? You and your family will love our parks. They have playgrounds, picnic areas, playing fields and nature walks. You can bicycle, walk, run, play sports and watch nature in our parks. Everyone who lives in Burnaby has the right to use them.
Eco-sculpturesEco-sculptures bring art and gardening together and teach us about nature. During the summer months, these magnificent sculptures made of thousands of plants are located throughout the city (see map on reverse and look for ). There is no cost to view these sculptures.
has so much to offerAnything you do that makes your spare time more fun and relaxing is recreation. It might be something you plan yourself, like a walk in a park. It might be something planned by others, like a pottery class or a game of soccer. Getting involved in activities such as arts, crafts, theatre, music, dance, physical fitness, sports and social gatherings are all recreation, and recreation is part of a healthy life.
Burnaby Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services has classes and activities for everyone: children, teens, adults and seniors. Everybody is welcome and prices range from no cost and low cost to more expensive. There is lots for you and your family to do together in this exciting city.
