Asweentermid-Octobersomestudentsaretakingtheirfirstmidterms.Theymightbeencounteringabitmorestressthanusual;somemightexperiencetheirfirstsignificantchallengesaswell.Thisisagreattimetocheckinwithyourstudentsandremindthemoftheresourcesavailableoncampus.TherearesomegreatideasforwaystosupportyourstudentintheMid-TermCheckuparticlebelow.

Thisisalsoagoodtimetotakealookattheuniversitycalendar.TheuniversityisclosedforThanksgivingholidayonThursday,Nov.24andFridayNov.25only.Haveyourstudentcheckwiththeirinstructorsregardinganyclasscancellationsthatmightoccurearlierthatweek.ResidencehallsdoremainopenovertheThanksgivingholidaywithcompresseddiningoptions.

AllfreshmanresidencehallscloseforWinterBreakonDec.16at10a.m.andreopenonJan.14at9a.m.Studentsmayleavetheirbelongingssecuredintheirrooms,butmaynotliveintheresidencehallsduringWinterbreak.TakealookattheHousingandResidenceLifewebsiteformoreinformation,includingimportantdates.

Mid-TermCheckupStudentsarehalfwaythroughthesemesterandthatmeanssomemid-termgradesarecomingtolight.Parentsmightexpecttheirstudenttodoaswellastheydidinhighschool.Somestudentswillrisetotheoccasion,andotherswillstruggletofindtheirwayintheirfirstsemesterwithaverageresults.

Don'toverreact.Keepitinperspective.Adjustingtothedemandsandrigorofuniversitylifetakesmanystudentsbysurpriseinthefirstsemester.Talkwithyourstudent.Itisagoodtimetodiscussthedetailsabouthowthesemesterandclassesaregoing.Askquestionssuchas:Whatisworking?Whatisnotworking?Whatisyourplantogetbackontrack?Reviewexpectations.Thisisagreatopportunitytodiscussorreviewexpectationswithyourstudentasyoumightbeondifferentsidesofthefence.Astudentmightbesatisfiedwiththeirgradeatthispointwhileaparentmightnot.It'sagreattimetonavigatethroughtheexpectationstoavoidextrapressureforeveryoneattheendofthesemester.Makeadjustments.Thismightbethetimetomakesomeshiftsoradjustments.Doesyourstudentneedtodecreaseworkhoursinordertofocusmoreonschool?OrmaybeexploreresourcesavailableattheStudentLearningCenters?

Midwayintothesemesterisachanceforparentsandstudentstoreflectonhowthesemesterisgoingandwhatchangesneedtobemade.Ifparentsandstudentscanfocuslessonthegradesandmoreontheprocess,thiscanbeagreattimetotalk,clarifyandmoveforwardtowardcreatingasuccessfulsemester.
