3rd grade• A transition year. The students are

now reading to learn instead of learning to read.

• We focus on responsibility, accepting consequences, organization, and self confidence and self esteem.

Curriculum Tour• Everyday Math

– First in math– Spiraling of concepts– Home links/answers– Student reference book (on-line)

Science• Three major units of study on a

Science– Land and water– Earth Materials– Human body/Sound

Social Studies• Develop an understanding of the

interdependence of people and the land

• Develop geography skills using map activities

• Develop responsible democratic citizenship

Language Arts• We will use the instructional structure of

the Reading and Writing Workshop to develop readers and writers

• The program has the following components: mini lessons, read alouds, shared reading, modeled reading, guided reading (the heart), independent reading and literature study

Technology• We will incorporate technology

into all aspects of the curriculum• We are the “home” of the Mac cart

for 3rd grade and we plan to utilize them as much as possible!

• Smart board activities have already begun!

Rubric Based Assessments

• B= beginning A=approaching M=meeting E=exceeding

• Report card will parallel with three trimesters

• PSSA’s are in April 12th-April-16th

Changes• If there are any changes to the

normal day as far as parent pick-up, or cares we must have a note to inform us of the change.

• If absent, please send in a note to school within three days

• Easy to open• Healthy snack (in handbook)• This will be a “working" snack

Birthday Celebration• We love to celebrate birthdays with our

children!• If you would like to drop off a snack to

celebrate please see the healthy snack list in the handbook (you can also order from Chartwells)

• Or if your child prefers he or she may bring in a book to read to the class.

Students of the month• 2-3 students will be randomly

selected each month• They will have the opportunity to

bring in their favorite picture book and read to the class

• We will take their picture and place it with their book in the showcase

• Volunteer sheets are at the back of the room!
