Therefore,that'snotgoodenough,solet'stakethebuildingthatNationalTeachersAcademyresidesinandturnitintoahighschool.Ourchildrenwouldallbedisplaced.WewouldbeforcedtomovetoanewbuildingatSouthLoopElementarythattheyarecurrentlygoingtobeconstructinginadifferentsite.Manyofus,likeCourtneyandmyself,withtheplanthatCPSisproposing...Ourchildrenwouldbesplitbecausetheythinkit'sagreatideatohavesecondgradethrougheighthgradeinthesameschoolwithincominghighschoolstudents.

GoingtoGaryComer,Ihadtolearndifferent...Like,thechildrenhavetotracktheteacher.Imean,literally,whereverthatteachergoes,thechildhastobethere.Theirposture,thecleanliness,theorder,howthey'reinorder...Itwasverychallengingformethefirstyear.Mydaughteradaptedwellbecauseofhercharacterandhowsheis,butasaparent,lookingfromtheoutsidein,IhadalotofquestionsthatIcouldn'tgetanswered,butyouhadtogothroughthatfirstyearexperiencetolearnhowtohandlethatsystem,howtoworkwithinthatsystem.

Atourschool,Idobelievethatmysonisbeingencouragedtobothmaintainhisownpersonalvoice,tolearntounderstandtheperspectiveofothers,andtousehisvoicenotjusttoamplifyhisownneedsandconcerns,butthoseofothersaswell.Ourschoolhasastrongsocialjusticebend,whichisimportanttousasafamilytoo,andmylittleguy,he'sanacquiredtaste.Hecanbeabitrigidandhecanbeabit...he'sgonnapushback,notinanegativeway,butbecausehereallyisjustverycuriousabouttheworldaroundhim.I'vebeenveryimpressedsofarthatinsteadofseeinghimasachildwhoistestingthelimitsconstantly,theyhavetakenthatas,"Okay,wellwhatcanwedowiththatidea?Howcanweprogressthat,howcanwemovethat?"andthathasencouragedhimtofeellike,"IamapartoftheschoolcommunityI'mapartofsomethingbiggerthanmyself."

WefeelstronglythateverychildinChicagoshouldhavethatopportunitytobesupportedinthatway,butweknowit'snotconsistentatallacrosstheboard.Idofeelthatashegoesthroughthegradesatourschoolthatthatwillcontinue,thattheywillcontinuetomakenoteofeachofourchildren'sinterests,concerns,andfindwaystobuildthatintowhattheyarelearningsothatitsnotjust1+1=2,butmoveitintotalkingaboutcommunitygardensandfarmersmarkets.Theyliterallytakealltheirlessonsandapplyittothebiggerworldthattheylivein,andhelpthemtounderstandthatthisisnotjustaboutyouandyourclassmates,butaboutabiggersystemwhichIthinkiscriticalatthispointinhistory.

Idoagree,yes,thatourschoolisdoingwhatwehopedthattheywoulddotosupportourathomelessonswithhimbecausebynomeansarewehandingoffresponsibilityat8:30everymorning,butthattheirgoalsandmissionstatementssupportwhoweareasafamilyandIalsobelievethatifthatshiftedatsomepoint,iftheschoolsgoalsandmissionstatementsnolongeralignedwithusasafamily,thatwecouldtalkaboutthat,thattheadministrationatourschoolwouldbeopentohearingthatfeedbackandresponsivetothatfeedbackaswell,whichiscriticaltous.Nothingstaysthesameforever.Youhavetobeableandwillingtomovewiththeshiftsandchanges.

Ithinkthatoneoftheotherthingsthatwehavedonethatstronglyencouragesthatreachingouttothechildrenwhomaybemomcan'tbeateverythingordadcan'tcometoeveryevent,isthatthoseofuswhoareatthisschoolallthetime,theyencourageustoworkinotherclassroomssothateverybodyhasamommyonthefieldtrip.Itsverymuchthatideaofacommunityorfamilythatintruth,inanyofourfamily,thereisarelativethatcannotgetadayoff.There'ssomepeoplewhocan'tbeavailableforX,Y,andZ,butinafamily,inacommunity,thereissomeonetherewhomakessureyourneedsaremet.Whetherthatbeworkinginthelunchroomandhelpingsomebodyopentheirlittlefruitpackthattheycan'topenorwhetherthatbeontheplaygroundhelpingkidstoresolveissues,Ithinkthatbyencouragingustonotonlyworkwithourownchildrenortheirclassroom,theyaretryingtobroadenthatreachtothefamilieswhoitjutmaynotberealisticforthemtosendsomeonetotheschoolssofrequently.
