Greetings Ladies,
There were 62 members at
our March meeting. We
installed Pauline Martin,
Mary Cole, Kathy Collaro
and Barbara Montanaro.
Welcome to our growing family!
Well, it’s a start of a new year for us.
Membership dues ($15.00) are due April
1st. See Diane Gleissner for your new
membership cards. Also, Joan Cole will
be collecting for the (“100 Club”) once
again. Numbers are $25 each. Buy one
yourself, or buy as a group!
I will be calling the Committee
Chairs, to see if they will stay on for
another year. I hope they will. I truly
appreciated the support and great job
everyone did this year. If you cannot stay
on, I understand. I hope new members
will step up to the plate. It is a fun way to
get to know each other. Yes, it is hard
work, but the results are always well
worth it!! Also, there is always someone
there to help you!
The Chinese Auction was a great
success as always! Thanks Eileen Byrnes
and Dorothy Fitzgerald for a job well
done! I want to thank all the ladies who
helped set up and worked the day of the
auction. We made over $4,600. Kudos to
all!
We also had our March 10th Fashion
Show. Thanks Diane Gleissner, and all

Let me begin by expressing
my great joy in receiving the
honor and privilege you, the
members have bestowed on
me by selecting me to serve
our Lodge as your Exalted
Ruler this year. I am grateful to all of you,
not only for your trust, but also your
confidence in my ability to lead our
Lodge. I will not take this responsibility
lightly. I want to thank Jerry Dickens Sr.
PER for his leadership role this past year,
a year filled with many great
accomplishments, and commit to you that
we will keep moving forward, building a
better Lodge and continue our outstanding
works in charity and Elkdom.
The new Elk Year 2012-13 brings with
it a change in the governance of our
Lodge. Until now, our Lodge’s finances
and material condition has been the
responsibility of the five members of the
Board of Trustees. At the Grand Lodge
session in Phoenix, delegates approved a
Resolution amending and clarifying
Section 16.120 of Grand Lodge Statutes
requiring incorporated lodges to have a
Board of Directors consisting of the four
Chair Officers (Exalted Ruler, Leading,
Loyal and Lecturing Knights) and the five
Trustees. As a Lodge incorporated under
the laws of the State of Florida, we are
required to have such a Board of
Directors.
This month on April 6th at 10:15 am,
the Chair Officers and the Trustees will
conduct the first meeting as the Board of
Directors of Palm Coast Lodge #2709. In
general, you the members will notice little
change in the Lodge.
The establishment of the Board of
Directors will not affect the management
of the Club facilities, which will remain
the responsibility of the House Committee.

demonstrated that working together they
can accomplish so much more, goals that
were single handedly impossible, not only
become possible but are wildly surpassed.

working together our Lodge will
continue to prosper, and anyone who
visits us will know they have been to
“Florida’s Friendliest” Lodge.
I am looking forward to another
positive year of accomplishments by our
great Lodge. I ask each and every one of
you to join me and our team and
contribute to our success. We are Elks,
we have much to be proud of, we are part
of the greatest fraternity in the world.
Join me and practice our tenets “Ever
Practice Brotherly Love; Be Just to your
fellow man; Be Charitable to all
mankind; and bear in mind that Fidelity
is of supreme importance.”
Membership is still the lifeblood of
our Lodge and our Order. This month it
is my pleasure to select member number
9 as our Elk-Of-The-Month. You may
know him better by the name Vincent
Sappupo Sr. or Uncle Sonny. Read the
wonderful nomination put together by
Brother Jack Konrad on page 2. Vinnie,
we love you Brother!
In closing I’d like to extend another
big “thank you” to everyone past and
present that committed their time and
resources to give us this proud heritage.
I look forward to meeting current and
new members to see how you can help
our Lodge, community, and young
people do even better.
God Bless You All
and God Bless America!

Elks,
Hi, thank you to everyone who has paid their dues. If you
have not paid them, please do so immediately as effective April
1st you are in arrears. I do not want to drop anyone from the
roles.
Please donate your used cell phones. The box is right inside the
Lodge front door. The old phones get recycled and our troops get to call
home for an hour for free for each and every cell phone we give.
Fraternally,
Jeannie Fontana
Lodge Secretary
Spring is here: Spring is here: Spring is here:
This spring, do your part to work toward a cleaner, greener and more sustainable lifestyle. Ensure all timer
-activated devices (e.g., lights, sprinklers) are properly adjusted for the extended daylight hours and help reduce energy usage during
evening hours by spending more time outdoors.
It is with great pleasure and an honor to welcome Vinnie Sapuppo Sr. PER as April 2012 Elk-Of-The-Month.
Vinnie was born in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from East New York Vocational School specializing in electrical
work in 1950. He immediately joined the Air Force and was honorably discharged as a Radar Mechanic in 1952.
Once home in Brooklyn, he worked as an electrician; a member of IBEW Local 3 (International Brotherhood of
Electrical Workers) until he earned his license which gave him the right to open his own business. During this time
he met Gloria and they were married in 1953, they will celebrate their 59th anniversary in November of this year. This
warm and friendly couple had five children, Angelo, Anthony, Fred, and Vinnie; our chef, and Mary Ann.
Vinco was the name Vinnie picked for his electrical business and it was so successful it allowed him to retire at the
age of 50 at which time he turned the business over to his eldest son Angelo. Our friend, moved to Palm Coast in 1981, and after
three years of retirement he went back into business as D&H Alarm, which he sold to Scott Alarm 15 years later.
The Elks have been fortunate to have had Vinnie as a member for 45 years. He joined the Elks New Milford Lodge 2290 in 1967
and went through all the Chairs except Chaplain, becoming Exalted Ruler in 1976.
Here in Palm Coast he was one of ten men to start our Lodge. They held the meetings in the community center where Vinnie
became one of the first Trustees and his membership number is 9. He was one of the 5 men who personally signed to buy the
property for our Lodge from ITT.
Guess who did most of the electrical work in our new Lodge?
And guess who just completed another five years as Trustee?
And guess who is going to serve as Esquire this year?
Vinnie has demonstrated even further just what volunteering means to the success of a Lodge. In addition to the above he has
been Chairman, and or a spirited member of the Bingo, Kitchen, Maintenance and Table Committees. The next time you see Vinnie
say “Hi.”, you will ne glad you did.

what does that have to do with”—she pointed to the couple—
“Dick and Jane?”….
Intellectual: Someone who knows when to quote what some
bright fellow once said. The unique or original statement or
thought today is almost impossible because of all the great
minds that came before us. “Ask not what your country can do
for you, but rather what you can do for your
country.” Originally said by Marcus Tullius,
Roman orator and statesman, 63 B.C.…One
of Lyndon B. Johnson’s favorite sayings was
“Come now, and let us reason together.” Is
from the Bible, Isaiah (chapter 1, verse 18)
…. ”Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor the
gloom of night stays these couriers from the
swift completion of their appointed rounds.”
Herodotus created this U.S. Postal Service
pledge back in approximately 450 B.C….
“Children today are tyrants. They contradict
their parents, gobble their food, and tyrannize
their teachers.” Was translated from Socrates,
c. 420B.C…
“The arithmetic looks okay.” I said to my
two companions at lunch. The bill and the tip
were $51 total. We each put up $17. Being that we were regular
customers, the owner let us have the last drink “on the house”
and sent back $5. The waitress gave each of us just $1 back,
keeping $2 for herself. Therefore each of us had paid $16 for a
total of $48.The waitress has $2. The total sum is therefore $50.
What happened to the extra dollar? Well, the house recorded
$46, the waitress $2 and we got $1 each for a total of $51. You
figure it out…
So long for now my brothers and sisters and remember:
The time you ENJOY wasting is not wasted time...
This and That by Jack Konrad “Common knowledge” is frequently
wrong, here are some examples of things
that many people believe but according to
my sources, just aren’t true… Myth: “Give
me a home where the buffalo roam, and
the deer and the antelope play…” Fact:
There are no antelope in North America. The
animal the song probably refers to is the
pronghorn, which resembles an antelope.
Real Antelope only live in Asia and Africa…
Myth: The forbidden fruit eaten by Eve was
an apple. Fact: The Bible makes reference to
the “fruit of the tree: (Genesis 3:3), but
names no particular fruit. Horticulturists’ say
that apple trees have never grown in the area
where the Garden of Eden supposedly
existed. She probably ate a pomegranate…
Reading an article about “Total Recall”, a
concept of the Memory Training Institute, I
was captivated by the words—“Total
Recall”, WOW! Perhaps this will help me to
remember names. One survey found that 83
percent of us worry about an inability to recall people’s names,
and I am surely one of them. I read the article, studied it really,
to improve my “proper name recall,” At the next dance I was
introduced to a couple of visiting Elks, I decided to remember
their names by noting they were the same as those of two
characters in a popular children’s story. After the dance as they
were saying good-by I teased, “ be careful going up that hill! But
you must get that all the time.” They smiled politely but said
nothing. After they left, Liz asked, “What was that all about?”
“Jack and Jill; Up the hill, Remember?” I replied. “Yes but

All District Deputies, Exalted Rulers, Officers and Members:
Our Order was originally founded to provide community service and to help those less fortunate in time of need. As
Elks, we serve as faithful servants to the communities in which we reside. In our changing society, with so many one-
parent or two working-parent families, offering family activities can make a positive difference in attracting Members.
It’s important for the new Lodge leaders to focus on family and community involvement when planning Lodge activities
throughout the year. Try conducting a monthly informal activities meeting with the Lodge Officers and invite the Trustees and
House and Lodge Committee Members. Extend an open invitation for all Members and their families to attend.
Also, invite representatives from any organization soliciting Lodge support to attend this meeting to explain the purpose of their
request. Explore the possibilities that their members can work with Elks Members to help meet their goal. During each activity
meeting, discuss the Lodge activities planned for the next several weeks. Open the meeting so everyone can express opinions and
concerns regarding planned activities and potential new ones. This will give you more time to focus on other agendas for your
regular meetings.
Involving the family and community in our many programs, as well as offering family activities, helps to generate Member and
public confidence and support of our Lodges and programs. Family activities will help in procuring new Members and keeping
existing Members by giving families “together time” to better utilize the continually shrinking hours families have in a fast-moving
society.
Family involvement can make a difference in the success of our Lodges because those parents and children who visit and learn
about our programs today will be the Members and leaders of our Lodges tomorrow. And involving community leaders from other
organizations can certainly help the general public better understand our purposes and programs that fully demonstrate our motto,
"Elks Care - Elks Share."
